Mentoring Tips

This page is for collection of useful advice, tips, strategies for mentoring new arrivals to Egypt.

Dirty cheat sheet

I have created a dirty cheat sheet to get off of the islands . . . long way but simple to understand and to make sure you don't forget any steps. it's located here

One way to hook newbs (if you are not on the island) is to give them a beetle. Put it in a terrarium, ask them to name it, then free it. Wait for the "It's HUGE!" (ie., free/drop it, not direct give) and tell them to pick it up. Use something colorful--doesn't need to be testworthy. I also help them gather 1000 thorns while explaining navigation. My camp is near school with bushes so this is convenient; got enough to give them the 1k but let them gather for a bit while I teach, check their work ethic. If they aren't begging or complaining I'll surprise them with 500 to finish up. Then warp them for a tour of FC: this is a mega, player built (stress the player built aspect of everything), these are some tests/games, this is my ugly sculpture (the FLAXQUEEN billboard), this is my wife's sculpture (Auditrix's "When Rabbits Attack" by the road), this is a REAL guildhall not like my dumpy one (visible on the right over the bridge), a player made this staircase to show where to negotiate the slope (sculpture on right just past the bridge), another player bred these flowers! (Abraham's formal and flower storage area) and this is a great sculpture (Abraham's back on the road further past the bridge). Takes an hour or two if you are teaching lots while doing it and works well as an introduction to Egypt.

Doubtless there's an equivalent run in most areas. I start in my camp just south of Cats Paw. Never gone to the islands to pick up newbs, just nab them when they show at camp or nearby. If I spot a lost looking person elsewhere I generally try to find a local I trust and pass the newb on. [Finkbug--sorry 'bout the length]

Useful French Phrases

Some phrases that Mentors who only speak English might find useful when encountering players who only speak French.

You can do a /info champollion that will give you the names of french speaking players.

Here is also a tool to help English mentors help out French players in the case of no French mentors being available: http://trans.voila.fr/voila this site should help out quite a bit. A similar tool that does not have the 300 character restriction is available at http://translate.google.com/translate_t
