How it all happens
Initiates
Type /info Nileside Cafe to get current information about the items most needed.
Come by the Nileside Cafe, just South of Liberty Bridge at 1343 3979. If you have Navigation Skills, you can waypoint to the Liberty Bridge Megalopolis, cross Liberty Bridge to the South, and follow the road to the East (left) through the gap in the mountains. The Nileside Cafe is at 1343 3979.
Click on the Nileside Cafe and read the messages, then click again and apply for membership.
If you'd like to hurry your application along, send a /tell <elder> to any of the Guild Elders. Keely, FaceAnkh, Shelomit, Hapi, rdk, Esme, Bri, and MarvL (in no particular order) are usually in the area.
Once your application has been accepted, a new Nileside Cafe chat tab will appear on your screen. Say "Hi" and, once you've accumulated your donation items, use the chat channel to ask if an Elder is available, so you won't waste a trip.
Carry and Waypoints
Most avatars can't carry 2000 items because of weight and bulk limits, so there's a +4.5K, 6 minute Carry Food kitchen right next to the Donation Chest. This allows you keep your normal personal items, or donate extra items (500 + 4500 = 5000 items) if you're so inclined. The donation chests are under the "Big D" sculpture.
If you don't have enough Navigation Skills (waypoints), there's a Guild Thorn Chest just South of Liberty Bridge, on the left between the Thorn Bushes and the School of Art. By collecting 1000 Thorns from the bushes, you'll be able to pay the Tuition for one of your seven Navigation Skills (Wayports).
As you probably can't carry more than 500 Thorns, use the guild chest for safe-keeping most of your Thorns. Once you've accumulated 1000 Thorns,
- come over to Nileside Cafe and eat some carry food
- go back to the chest
- take the 1000 Thorns
- pay the Tuition for your new (or additional) wayport
If you wish to leave extra Thorns for your next guildy, that's wonderful. If you're in a bit of a hurry and need to borrow some Thorns for a few days, that's fine too.
If you're willing to risk your Thorns for a minute or so, you don't need Carry Food. You can carry some Thorns over to the SArt, 400 or so at a time, drop them, and then pick them up all at once to pay the Tuition.
Associates
Now that you have an available Wayport, you've accumulated your donation goods, and you've checked on the chat channel to confirm that an elder is in the area, you're ready for the next step.
If you have Carry Food near your base camp, you can save some wayport time. Otherwise, come back down to the Nileside Cafe, next to the Donation Chests.
- Set one of your Waypoints to Nileside Cafe
- Eat some +4.5K, 6 minute Carry Food
- Wayport to your base camp or somewhere nearby (you have 6 minutes, total)
- Take the donation items that you've accumulated (you can carry 5000 items)
- Wayport back to Nileside Cafe
- Place your donation in one of the chests under the "Big D" sculpture
- Allow the Elder to verify your donation and make you an Associate
Running the Kitchen Line
Associates can eat the food in the Gastronomy Kitchens.
- Head South along the road until you get to the Nileside Commons at 1352 3890. It's at the first crossroads, and you'll be able to see the Welcome Banner
- Apply for membership in the Nileside Commons. If you're comfortable around more experienced players, you may prefer to join the Nileside Lounge
- Turn to the right, and follow the dotted road to 1133 3764, just past the School of Thought
- Take a look at some of the excellent sculpture that folks have built near the beginning of the Gastronomy Line. My favorite is the Mushroom display, just to the left of the line
- Click on your Skills Tab, scroll to the bottom, and note your Gastronomy score
- Eat food from the first kitchen, the second kitchen, ...., kitchen #270. Take your time, and don't outrun your computer.
- Each person is a little bit random, so there are 270 kitchens as an allowance for 20 hash duplicates, or a few empty kitchens.
- When you reach the Bonfire Bar and the Star Sculpture, note your Gastronomy score again. It should be at least 250, and your perception should be at +3. We keep track of final scores to ensure that somebody (starts with a "T") hasn't sneaked a code change in on us. Just mention your final score in the chat channel. (You can also ask to be booted if that's your preference.)
- If any of the kitchens have fewer than 10 servings, say so in the chat channel. If a few kitchens are empty you probably still have a few to spare, but keep track as you might need to go back and eat from them if you're really bad at hash coding. :)
The Grand Tour
- Once your Gastronomy Score reaches 250 you're done, really, but if you have a few minutes you're encouraged to take the Grand Tour.
- Just ahead of you are several more kitchens that we use for testing, and then a Trail of Bonfires. The Guild is doing some Flavor Research, and the Bonfires mark the proposed route for a new Flavor Line.
- When you near the cliffs on your left, do a high F7 and look at our rather impressive Volcano. There's a altar and a superior Papyrus Drying Area at the highest point on the edge of the Caldera.
- The Flavor Line (you've been following it backwards) begins at Nileside Foods.
- If you'd like to get involved with our new Flavor Line by building a cluster of 5 kitchens somewhere along the proposed route, we'll gladly provide the materials.
- If you want to do a bit of exploring, you might be surprised to discover that the School of Thought is just to the Northwest.
- Just to the Northeast of Nileside Foods is a very nice area with a lot of Anyone Buildings, in the River Plains newcomer's area.
- Heading North again will bring you to the Nileside Commons, the Nileside Cafe (don't forget to resign), and the Nileside Lounge.
