- Watermelon yield is based on multiple factors
- Factor 1: Location (Confirmed- Several hundred coords makes a difference in recipe)
- Factor 2: Time (Confirmed- It changes at least once per day and may shift slowly all day long)
Please include a full in game date & time, /time will get you the information in game.
No more than 7 water can be used in any one watering period. For those that have listed more than 7 used, retry the formula with 7 in place of the higher number. Also, when you use a higher number, check the jugs used, as it should only use 7 even if you type in 16. -Bortoas
So far all I know is, they grow in grass, and require "a specific amount of water". They need to be watered 4 times, and I tried 1-2-3-4 water, which gave one melon. I heard 2-2-2-2 gives 5 melons but can't be sure. Will try more tonight. Please post your experiences! - GiantPineapple
So far the best reported combinations are 4-3-2-3 (anywhere from 5 to 14) and 2-3-2-3 (5-14) the exact yield appears to depend on location. Planting as close to water as possible increases yield significantly. Different bodies of water may give different bonuses. I haven't tried planting on the nile, but it seems likely that this would give the biggest boost. Still no word yet on getting melons to seed. - GiantPineapple
- GiantPineapple's Fiancee here: Just to eloborate on his post: 4/3/2/3 gives me 2 melons. And 2/3/2/3 is the first watering pattern I discovered shortly after the seeds were given out. It has consistantly given me and other friends 11 watermelons in the Sinai area. It does not matter time of day, or distance from water. Other Patterns on this page do not work for me in Sinai, so I'm assuming they are region specific. No idea how to produce more seeds yet!--Amanda
Up in ND I find that 6-6-6-5 gives me the best results, a whopping 19 melons per seed. Are results dependant just on location or on location and planter? - Nhimdahl
At the same place where the 6-6-6-5 gave 19 I got 13 from 6-6-5-4. - Yazza
To check on Nhimdahl's thesis and another variable (membership in AoH) I loaned my seeds to my fiancee (who is not in AoH). She reported than she and a male friend consistently got the exact same results by planting in the same place with the same watering pattern. This doesn't completely refute a personalized melon yield thesis, but it is food for thought. - GiantPineapple

I just used your method and mine at the same time. Yours gave 2 and mine gave 17. I live in VoK in case that makes a difference. Oh, and mine method is 5-1-2-4. Crowding didn't seem to affect it, and time of day doesn't either. I suspect every region has a combination that works best.
If a combination is also for making new seeds, then it might be different per region too.
200 feet from nearest lake vs. 1 foot results in no difference.

The results above tell me that time of day is in fact a factor in production. As soon as the sun set it took me dramatically less water in the second stage than it did when the day was up to get 17 melons, and using the amount of water I had been using during the day reduced the yield. I still can't figure out how to get 19 at home, unfortunately.

I seem to be having a problem growing melons now. I used to be able to get 11 to the seeds with watering pattern 2-3-2-3. I could use that any time of the day, or night. And in any grassy area in Sinai. So today I tried, and now I'm only getting 2 per seed. Every other pattern I used to know is no longer working either. Its currently 8:20pm (T.T.) and in the last few hours in game nothing is working for me. I tried the 6-6-6-6 pattern my fiancee, Giantpineapple, said works in our area, but only getting 5 per seed. I'll report any more changes as I make up new patterns. Please post here if you have had this problem too. Thank you --Amanda

10/19/2004 -- I noticed that for a given location there is an optimal watering pattern. Assume the watering pattern is [a, b, c, d], if I watered with [e, f, g, h], then my yields were coming out to: max(6 - abs(a-e) + abs(b-f) + abs(c-g) + abs(d-h), 0)* 3 + 1, which in english is "the max yield is 19, and for each watering cycle you loose 3 yield for each 1 water it is off, but the yield is never less than 1". Not yet gotten a yield of 22. -- Gustav
