Fumeology

Fumeology

General Information

The Art of the Pipe can be learned at the School of Art for 7 Fine Glass Rods. Once you have learned the skill, you can make a Hookah Bowl in the Glory Hole using 1 Fine Glass Rod. A Hookah is built using a Hookah Bowl, 14 Canvas, and 1 Water in Jugs. It will have the same quality as the Hookah Bowl it is made from. Quality seems to effect how many tokes each herb will give, although it is common opinion that there is a time limit that has an effect as well.

A Hookah can be loaded with herbs, lit, and cleaned only by the owner. The owner can also pick it up, and it can be stashed in a chest like any other object. Just drop it again to use it. If it still had an herb in it when picked up, you can continue smoking that herb when you drop it. Anyone may smoke from a hookah once it is lit. One or multiple types of herbs may be loaded into a Hookah. Each lighting provides a number of tokes based on Hookah quality, no matter how many herbs are added. You need one deben of Charcoal to light a Hookah, and one Water in Jugs to clean the Hookah. The Hookah must be cleaned each time in order to add new herbs. The timer between tokes is based on Constitution and is 45 seconds with 0 Constiution.

Points seem to be given randomly. Some people will get points, others will not. When you do get a point, it will say:

Followed by a description of the herb. "The smoke is Clean and <flavor>, with an aroma of <aroma>.

You can fail to get a point on the first toke or first several tokes of an herb, but then get one later. A point on the 34th toke is the latest which has been observed so far, but some combinations of herbs may just not give points at all.

It seems that one can not get a Fumeology point from the same herb or combination of herbs more than once, although it has been confirmed by multiple people that different herbs, or combinations thereof, with identical tastes and aromas (see tables below) will give additional Fumeology points. At 49 Fumeology, one receives a permanent increase to their perception. At 243 Fumeology, one receives a second permanent increase to their perception.

It is possible to get a point in Fumeology, but not see a message about flavor/aroma. To avoid wasting additional herbs, check your score while you're smoking. You might have gotten a "stealth" point! It's not clear if this is a bug or not, but that's how it works!

You can keep track of which herbs you've smoked with this Checklist.

Notes and Discussion

As each hypothesis is either verified or refuted, please add the information to the above section and remove the associated discussion from below.

Me and some friends made an interesting observation with smoking. It seems as if u get the flavor and aroma a lot more at night than during daytime. We're doing a bit more of testing in this. Did anyone else notice this? - Mortomes
Yes, I have also noticed that. Me and my friend were smoking at around 3:00 AM, but as day came, it began to go significantly slower - Peronix
Me aswell, seems to start around 1AM for me... Not sure when itl end yet.-Zatarg

The number of tokes I've found per herb has maxed out at 25, with exceptional food. It may be that the number is based on hookah, or it might be that only the time per burning is influenced. Any conflicting data on this one? - Sedelyan

When smoking more then a single herb, it appears that if X+Y = P , where P is an aroma flavor combo and X and Y are some herbs , X+Y+X and 2X+Y are all gong to equal P . Y+X and X+Y also equal both the same value : P. - Illumination

Flavor and Aroma tables

Tables showing the flavor and aroma for particular herbs or combinations of herbs:

(these were split off into separate pages as there were two seperate copies of the table here, and the page was getting rather huge)

It has been reported that some combinations of herbs wouldnt give points, even after a large number of try. Here's a place to keep track of those, so we dont waste our herbs for useless combinations.
