Monument Tests > The Test Of The Ornamental Orchid

A discussion of this test is at: http://www.atitd.net/forum/showthread.php?t=8340

Some orchids are extremely rare and germinate and flower only when planted in the right soil conditions AND when certain fungi are around (this is actually factual see http://helios.bto.ed.ac.uk/bto/microbes/mycorrh.htm & http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orchid). Using Ecology and your Knowledge of Fungi plant a rare Orchid. Once it germintes tend to it carefuly so that the Ecology levels stay within it's needs. It will then blossom but need careful pruning to ensure that it only has the most beautiful flowers. Only the owners of the most beautiful Orchids will pass this test.

Notes: Orchids can be crossbred and this is to be encouraged.

The more rare the orchid the more beautiful the flower will be. However the most beautiful ones will need rarer mushrooms for germination. It will not be enough to plant by mushrooms that are currently spawned. Planting will start a timer of 8 Teppy hours after which the flower can germinate if conditions are right. So part of the puzzle will be to predict where shrooms are likely to grow. Range will be within 100-200 co-ordinates of the fruiting body of the mushroom - bear in mind the main part of any fungi consists of microscopic fibres hidden within the ground which can extend over large distances. So although the fruiting mushroom is not visible the planted seed would still be in contact with it.
