The Test Of The Tomb Of The Immortal

Other languages:
A list of Tombs of the Immortal can be found here. Feel free to update the list if you build a puzzle of your own. Construction costs and design interface are listed on the bottom of the page.

In this Thought test, you must design a sliding-block puzzle for your fellow Egyptians to play and judge.

Rules of the Puzzle

The Tomb of the Immortal puzzle field is a closed rectangle, with one or more exits. The field has an arrangement of closets (reddish-brown) and Sarcophagus (yellow). Clicking on either end of a closet or a Sarcophagus moves it in the opposite direction, but only if it is not blocked by another piece. Push all of Sarcophagi out of the puzzle field to complete the challange and judge the test.

Note that closets can also be removed out of the puzzle field, but only when all Sarcophagi are removed the puzzle is won.

Tips and Tricks on Solving the Puzzle

Many Tombs of the Immortal can be solved by "randomally" toying around with the closets. You can easily identify such puzzles when the puzzle field is cluttered (there are many closets) or almost empty (there are few closets): on the first case, you'll have a very limited number of moves, maybe even one, and it will quickly lead to the solution. On the second case, you'll have many moves, and it is likely almost all of them will solve the puzzle. Intuitively (but not always), many Tombs with two or more Sarcophagi can be solved likewise.

When watching a more sophisticated puzzle, remember one golden rule:

Don't shy away from moving the Sarcophagus away from the exit.

The trick to watch for is some sort of choke. One (or more) closets are blocking your Sarcophagus, but clearing them will cause another block, and vice versa. Such chokes can be simple (three small closets in a [ like structure: the vertical closet allows only one of the horizontal closets to move) or more elaborate (for example, a series of vertical closets that almost completely block horizontal passage, except in one position that can be moved around).

In order to allow the Sarcophagus to exit the board, you must remove the choke. This can be done by following the troublesome closets till you reach one closet that controls the movement of both (in the above example, the vertical part of the [). Try finding a position in the board to move that closet into: usually an empty space with similar size. Once you manage to move that closet there, the choke will be solved.

More elaborate puzzles will have multiple chokes (using the above scheme twice or thrice) or chokes within chokes: when trying to clean one choke you encounter another one that prevents you from cleaning the first. They are all solved by cleaning the chokes methodically, one by one. Remember that if the Sarcophagus passes one choke, you're "allowed" to recreate it in order to solve another choke.

The choke within a choke paradigm is common to many 6x6 Rush Hour puzzles. When encountering 6x6 puzzles, you may want to search for it before starting the solve the puzzle.

Building Cost

The test building is built in a Small Construction Site. Construction cost:

Designing the Puzzle

Once your tomb is constructed, you may design your puzzle. Once you start a new design, you're required to enter the dimensions of the puzzle field: it need not be a square, and can up to 8x8 in size. The pyramid will open and clicking on the walls will allow you to:

  1. Add a small (2x1) or large (3x1) closet. It will appear adjacent to the wall you clicked on, and can be manipulated by clicking the edges- much like moving closets in the puzzle.
  2. Add a small or large Sarcophagus. Manipulating it is identical to manipulating a closet.
  3. Open the wall (creating an exit for the Sarcophagus).
  4. Finish the design of the puzzle, entering Play Mode. This will allow other players to solve and judge your puzzle.
