Egyptian Hieroglyphs representing a single consonant or sound.

It should be noted that Egyptions did not habitually write vowels unless at the beginning of the word or where there was likely to be confusion, as in a name

Hieroglyph Representation English Pronounciation
Vulture a or ah This symbol may have originally been pronounced as a glottal stop, but it is commonly used as what is technically a weak consonant; a as in father
The flowering reed i or y Technically a weak consonant, it was likely most commonly pronounced like the y in yes.
Two flowering reeds y Two flowering reeds represented a stronger y than the single reed. Also as in Discovery
A person's arm a A deep gutteral sound made in the throat which occurs in Arabic in Hebrew. The closest English equivalent would be a as in car.
Quail chick u or w Much like the Welsh w, this is technically a weak consonant, and is pronounced as either oo as in boot or w as in wind depending on it's place in the word.
