Unlike basic metals, such as Iron and Copper, Alloys cannot be mined directly. They are produced by combining ores in an Amalgamation Furnace. Note that they cannot be made by combining the metals themselves. It is the ores within stones that must be combined. This is achieved by putting stones containing the required ores into the same cart, and then loading them into the Amagamation Furnace. The available Alloys are Brass, Bronze and Steel. Each is made by combining different basic metals in various rations. See the sections below for details.
The Amalgamation Furnace can hold a maximum of 22 Ore Stones, and requires 18 Charcoal to fire. The firing process will take 430 seconds (a litte over 7 minutes).
Ores Required: Copper and Zinc
Ratio Required: 1:1 (Copper : Zinc)
Brass can be an awkward and annoying Alloy to make. This is partly due to some kind of "bug" that will sometimes make a reasonable smelt result in no Brass at all. The exact cause is unknown, although there is a suggested work-around that seems to work in most cases.
Fill your ore cart with 20 usable stones, keeping the ratio at 1:1. Continue mining until you have a couple of stone that are pure Copper, containing 1 or 2 clusters. Add these to your cart so that you have 2-3 more Copper than Zinc. Smelt in the Amalgamation Furcance.
All smelts were "pure", meaning there were no pollutants contained in any of the ore stones used.
Copper | Zinc | Brass Yield | Comments |
15 | 12 | 9 | 12 Zinc to 12 Copper for 12 Brass, minus 3 for extra Copper is 9... Pattern? |
23 | 22 | 0 | 1 extra Copper did not work... possible bug attack. |
22 | 20 | 37 | 20 Zinc plus 20 Copper for 40 Brass, minus 2 for extra Copper is 38... no pattern. |
16 | 14 | 26 | +2 Copper, smelt worked fine. Again, no real pattern when compared to above results. |
Be sure to note that my +1 Copper smelt did NOT work at all. My +2 Copper smelts worked fine, but I did not test +3 Copper. Basically, I would advise adding just 2 Copper for now. (Unless you want to risk losing hours of work to test +3 so you can post it here, of course!)
Ores Required: Copper and Tin
Ratio Required: 1:1 - 4:1
A much more "forgiving" alloy, as the ratio is a bit easier to achieve. However, even when you are going for a 1:1 ratio, always make sure there is at least 1 more Copper than Tin, otherwise you could end up with no Bronze at all.
All smelts were "pure", meaning there were no pollutants contained in any of the ore stones used.

24 | 18 | 32 | No apparent pattern yet, but a nice yield. |
Ores Required: Iron and Aluminium, or Iron and Tin
Ratio Required: Anywhere from 2:1 to 15:1
This alloy is the most "forgiving" of all. It seems that nearly any ratio will work, as long as there is more Iron than Aluminium. The yield seems to be based on the total number of clusters, using a very simple equation:
Number of Clusters / 4 = Steel
All smelts were "pure", meaning there were no pollutants contained in any of the ore stones used.
