Having established here that significant microbe shuffling happens on a 32x32 grid, I took a closer look at the 32x32 patch in my own back yard.

To test the shift across a coordinate, I placed two kettles on either side of the coordinate, and did an open kettle yeast test. By placing four kettles each 2 coordinates apart, I was able to test the changes over four coordinates at once. Notice that a couple of spots I would have liked to have tested where covered by water.

Results
The average Total Shift between points on the boundary is 9.6. The average Total Shift between points within the patch is 5.4. This result is all the more striking when you remember the boundaray measurement points are only seperated by 2 coords. The points within the patch are 15 coord apart. Another obvious feature is that the shift on the various sides of the patch varies a lot. From an average of 19.3 across coordinate 3328n to an everage of 4.8 across coordinate 3360n. Jaby's speculation about the importance of the powers of 2 comes into play again here. 3328 is divisible by 256, 3360 only by 32. This suggests the microbe shift across coordinates is controlled by how divisible that coordinate is by 2. Some tests on this theory follow here.
