I am going to try and explain the basics of cooking the way I understand it. I know there are other guides regarding cooking but am going to try to write this guide by keeping it simple and easy to understand.
Keep in mind that this is based on knowledge I gained from the wiki guides as well as my own experience. Therefore I might have made a mistake here and there. I also will not mind feedback from people pointing out where I might have made a mistake.
Before I start I would like to mention a couple of links you will need as we go along in this guide. You can then read through my definitions but everything will be explained in more detail further down.
Image which displays grid locations of the most common used Bases
Open this up in a seperate window/tab, or print it out, as we will use it alot. I have found it easier to print this image and work from the printed copy on paper. Also keep in mind this grid and coordinate system has nothing to do with the World coordinates within ATITD.
I will refer to this as the Food Map later in this guide.
The Food Reference Chart
Open this up in a seperate Window/Tab as it will also be used alot. Alternatively you may decide to download the spreadsheet listed at the bottom of the Food Reference Chart (Reference.xls - Created by OldJoe).
I will refer to this as the Food Reference Chart later in this guide.
It is also essential to download the Distances.zip file at the bottom of the Food References Chart. I imported that into Excel to make it easier for me to sort and search for Herb distances. I will refer to this as the Distance Chart later in this guide.
Example 1:
3 Coconut Meat
3 Oil
1 Dwarf Wild Lettuce
1 Tsangto
Bases will be Cocnut Meat and Oil as both equals the highest quantity (3) of all Ingredients.
Example 2:
3 Coconut Meat
2 Oil
1 Dwarf Wild Lettuce
1 Tsangto
Bases will only be Coconut Meat as Coconut Meat has the highest quantity (3) of all Ingredients. Even though Oil has a quantity of 2 it still does not equal the highest quantity and therefor will be seen as an Additive.
Lets start by explaining how the food grid works. If you open up the Food Map you will notice that it has a X-axis and a Y-axis. The purpose of this map is to display where the most common ingredients are located on the Food Map. Remember that this grid/map has nothing to do with the world map of ATITD. It is the locations of the Ingredients used by the game engine to determine the location of each ingredient and forms the heart of the cooking system. The main purpose of this map is to determine the distances between any 2 given ingredients and how well it will react with each other. The coordinates in the Food Reference Chart is the coordinates to this map, not to coordinates within the ATITD world.
If you now open up the Food Reference Chart you will see 2 values in the Coordinates column against each Ingredient. Find Abdju Fish (Right at top) and you will see that Abdju Fish has the Coordinates of 973,630. The 973 value is the X-axis value and the 630 is the Y-axis value. If you now switch to the Food Map you will see that thats exactly where Abdju Fish is located on that map.
Now lets try to place an Ingredient on that Map. Let use Blueberry Tea this time. Its a herb and not a common Base and therefore we have to place it on the Food Map to see its location.
Step 1: Find Blueberry Tea in the Food Reference Chart
Step 2: Look at what Coordinates Blueberry Tea is located at by looking at the values in the Coords column.
Step 3: Write down those values (ie: 963,725)
Step 4: Open the Food Map
Step 5: Find the position 963,725 on the Food Map
You should now see that its located very close to Abdju Fish.
Hopefully the above information will allow you to now understand how to position any Ingredient on the Food Map.
Distances between Base ingerdients and Additive Ingredients will determine to which Base any given Additive will bind within a recipe. Additives binds to the Base closest to it on the Food Map
Golden Rule 1: An Additive will always bind to the closest Base
Also keep in mind that the closer the Additive is positioned to the Base it are binding to, the longer the duration will be as well as the greater impact it will have on your Stats increase/decrease for that given Additive.
Golden Rule 2: Try to keep the distance as small as possible between a Base and Additive
When using recipes with more than one Base try to keep them far apart. The reason for this is that you don't want an Additive to bind to the wrong Base and the further they are apart the easier it is to determine to which Base the Additives you use will bind. Usually i divide the Food Map into 4 areas. The Top-Left Square (-,+), Top Right (+,+), Bottom Left (-,-) and Bottom Right (+,-). If I use a 2 base recipe I try to select bases where its seperated into different Areas to make my life easier.
Golden Rule 3: Try to keep the Bases used far apart, preferrably different areas
As you have probably noticed it lists all Ingredient found in the game. You will also see + and - in the STR, DEX, END, SPD, CON, FOC and PER columns. Plus(+) Means that stats in that area will improve if the Ingredient is used properly. Minus(-) means the Stats in that Area will decrease. No value (+ or -) means that that area will stay unaffected. Potency is how potent the herb are... the higher the value the better it is. The other value in the potency column (1, Peret II-24) is just an ATITD date on which that herb had that potency value. The reason for that is that over time potency of a given Herb changes and the date is just an indication when it was measured against that potency value. However changes should not be too great and I ignore the date most of the time. The Coords is the cordinates where that Ingredient is located on the Food Map. 1st Best, 2nd Best and 3rd Best is the Ingredients closest, second closest and third closest to that Ingredient on the Food Map. The Best Cheap is the closest Cheap Ingredient (easy to get).
This is probably one of the most important tools when cooking food. I downloaded the Distance.txt file and imported it into Excel. This way I can sort/search items etc. May I recommend for you to do the same if possible. I will try to update this page with an attachment to my Excel spreadsheet. Keep in mind you can work off the Distances.txt file directly and don't need Excel.
In meantime here are the steps how you can get that distance file into Excel.
Step 1: Download Distances.zip from the Food Reference Chart page
Step 2: Unzip the Distances.zip file once its downloaded. The result will be a Distances.txt file.
Step 3: Open Excel
Step 4: Click on File then Open
Step 5: A window will appear and on the bottom change the Dropdown list to All Files (*.*)
Step 6: Now locate the Distances.txt file on your computer and click on Open
Step 7: A text import window will appear. Just click on Finish
Step 8: Save the file now as an Excel spreadsheet and youre done.
However I then resize the columns for better readability.
The main purpose of this Distance Chart is to pinpoint each Ingredient exactly relative to another ingredient. If you look at the row containing Dark Ochoa and Bhillhawa and then to the right (last column) you will notice the distance between those 2 items are 3. Almost placed on-top of each other.
Lets try to get together a simple single base recipe that will improve our stats on CON. I dont much mind negative stats in any other area as I plan to stand still in one spot. Therefore its quite easy to slap something together. I also take into consideration that I am only using one Base and therefore will have a shorter duration as with a multiple base recipe. Keeping this in mind I should try to not use more than one additive starting off as using more than one additive per Base also will give me a shorter duration. I can however manipulate the duration in several ways and will go into that a bit later.
I usually start off by identifying my Additives first before even looking at what base I will use. I now open up the Food Reference Chart and sort it on CON and Potency. I now scroll down to where all the Herbs are with the highest potency value which will improve my CON. Topping the list are Miniature Lamae with a potency value of 5824... however I don't have any of those in stock. Next on the list is Yellow Gentain... none in stock either. I now move further down on the list... trying to find the highest possible potency which I have in stock BUT also illimunate those herbs I have in stock which I might use later for other recipes. A good example of this is Cicada Bean which I'll rather keep for a high FOC recipe.
I find Pale Russet which I have in stock. I take the coordinates of Pale Russet and open up the Food Map. I am hoping to find a common base close to this Herb. Pale Russet is lying at 609,-45 and close enough to a few bases. It seems to me that Malt (Raw) is the closest and I now check the distance chart to make sure about the exact distances and its lying about 140 from Malt (Raw) and 223 from Honey. Both those ingredients will be ideal as a base and usually I will either go for the one I have more of in stock OR the one with the higher potency value. In this case i will settle for Malt (Raw).
I now have to decide on my recipe's quantities. If I want it to last very long I will try to get as low a ratio as possible... within practical limits. Im not too worried about having a high duration at the moment so I will settle for a 6:1 ratio and therefore use 6 Malt (Raw) and 1 Pale Russet. I will also use a copper cookpot.
6xMalt (Raw) 1xPale Russet
The end result is a CON of 20 which I think is pretty good for a single base recipe.
Full stats STR -20 DEX 0 END 0 SPD -19 CON +20 FOC 0 PER -3
If I would like to have a longer duration I will drop the base/additive ratio from 6/1 to 5/2 or even 4/3 where the 4/3 would last the longest out of those mentioned.
Lets try another recipe. This time we will use 2 bases in the recipe. In the above example you noticed a recipe with a +20 CON for a single base. If I now have another base with say a +18 CON and create a recipe from the +20 CON and the +18 CON Base/Additive combinations will I end up with a +38 CON? The answer is no. How the system calculates that is a follow. Base 1 with additive stat result multiplied by itself. It multiplies then Base 2 with additive stats with itself and adds it to the Base 1 calculation. In other words 20x20 (400 for Base 1) + 18x18 (324 for Base 2) which gives 724. Now we take the square root of 724 which is 26.9. Round it off to 27 and that will be the new stat for CON on the multiple base recipe.
For this example I will try to create a nice Mining/Carry Recipe and instead of increasing one specific stat I will try to Increase me STR, DEX and PER at the same time.
Once again I first start with determining the additives I am going to use. At least one of the additives must have 2 of those 3 stats without a penalty for the remaining area. The other Additive must have at least improve one of those 3 stats without penalizing the other 2. Finding the Additve which will improve 2 stat areas have priority and therefore I do that one first as the other additive will have to address the remaining stat. I am thinking here of using a herb with decent STR and DEX but with a very high PER to try and get to a 1sec or less pull time. In other words to have a high PER and lower STR, DEX. Therefore i will try to group STR, DEX together and PER alone... if i can find the right Herb to do that. In the case of STR, DEX I will settle for a Herb with a potency lower than 3600 BUT in PER I ideally am looking for a Herb in excess of 4000 potency.
I open up the Food Reference Chart and sort on STR followed by potency. The acceptable potency Herbs I see affecting both the Stat areas STR and DEX are:
Herb | Potency | Coords | STR | DEX | END | SPD | CON | FOC | PER | Consideration |
Black Pepper Plant | 2394 | -934,-597 | + | + | - | - | No go as there is a negative in PER
Yellow Tristeria | 4494 | -436,770 | + | + | - | - | No go as there is a negative in PER
Altar's Blessing | 4816 | 226,907 | + | + | - | No stock
Fire Lily | 444,773 | + | + | - | - | No go as there is a negative in PER
Medicago | 11,364 | + | + | - | - | No listed potency
Dwarf Wild Lettuce | -293,663 | + | + | - | - | No listed potency
Lilia | -955,343 | + | + | - | - | No stock |
Not really finding what I am looking for I am considering my options. I'm not looking for a very high STR, DEX and therefore might gamble on one of those Herbs with unlisted potencies. Seeing that I have a choice of 2 Herbs here to choose between I might just as well consider a couple of extras. Which one of those 2 herbs will give me my best distance to a Base. Lets evaluate those 2 quickly on a glance at the Food Map.
Medicago -> 11,364 - Positioned very close to Dates which I have plenty of. (Distance 93)
Dwarf Wild Lettuce -> -293,663 - Positioned very close to Oxyrynchus Fish which I have plenty of. (Distance 57)
Lets now check the exact distences on the Distance Chart. We see that Medicago <-> Dates are 93 apart and that Dwarf Wild Lettuce <-> Oxyrynchus Fish are ony 57 apart. Great either will do just fine and I will use Dwarf Wild Lettuce due to me having a greater quantity here.
Now I need to find the PER Ingredient for my recipe. All I need is an Ingredient that won't penalize me on both STR and DEX. I also need to place my second base away from my first base. I once again switch to the Food Reference Chart and sort on PER followed by potency. Suitable items are those items that don't have a negative STR or DEX and have a potency above 4,000:
Herb | Potency | Coords | STR | DEX | END | SPD | CON | FOC | PER | Consideration |
Houseleek | 4046 | -605,424 | - | + | + | Suitable but try for higher potency
Shrub Sage | 4676 | 72,-295 | + | - | + | Suitable
Garcinia | 4718 | 848,858 | + | - | - | + | Suitable
Blueberry Tea Tree | 4928 | 963,725 | + | - | - | + | No Stock
Digweed | 5348 | -390,284 | - | - | + | No Stock
Yava | 5768 | -647,232 | - | - | + | No Stock |
I now have a choice between Houseleek, Shrub Sage and Garcinia. I will now try to strip those Ingredients I think might be usable in other recipes in the future. Garcinia I might use in END recipes which are used alot. Houseleek I think is a bit too weak for what I want in the Potency department. That leaves me with Shrub Sage. Before I decide to use Shrub Sage I must check against the Food Map to see at a glance how it is situated on the map. I will now try to find a suitable Base for it and can see 3 immediate possibilities of bases which I will verify on the Distance Chart. Distances from Shrub Sage to Barley (Burnt) is 153... to Garlic 251... and to Grilled Onions 232. I therefore will settle on Barley (Burnt) as the Base.
Final Recipe 3 Barley (Burnt) 3 Oxyrynchus Fish 1 Dwarf Wild Lettuce 1 Shrub Sage
End result is: STR +21 DEX +21 END 2 SPD -1 CON -11 FOC -27 PER +17
This also tells me one thing and that is that the potency value of Dawrf Wild Lettuce is probably over 5000 due to the extreme high STR and DEX.
Multiple additives can be added to any given Base within a recipe. However that comes with a penalty. For each extra Additive added to a Base a duration penalty kicks in. There are however a couple of ways to try and counter this.
One method is by changing the Base/Additive ratio. For example changing a 3:1 ratio to a 2:1 ratio which will in turn increase the duration of the recipe. Another way is to add more Bases to a recipe. For example change a 2 Base recipe to a 3 Base recipe if you have cooking level 3 as the more Bases you have the longer the duration will be.
Another penalty is that the longest distance between any given Additive binding to that Base in the recipe will be inherited by every Additive you use to bind against that base.
Example:
You use a Base Honey and bind Additives Malt (Raw), Malt(Burnt) and Tilapia Fish. The distances from Honey to the Additves are as follow:
Malt (Raw) -> 359
Malt (Burnt) -> 328
Tilapia Fish -> 316
The furthest distance of the additves binding to Honey are Malr (Raw) on 359. What will happen is that the game engine will change all those distances from Honey to the Additives as:
Malt (Raw) -> 359
Malt (Burnt) -> 359
Tilapia Fish -> 359
This means when using multiple Additves try to choose a base that is situated nicely inbetween the Additives to get the furthest distance as short as possible. Remember distance is important and we dont want it to get too long as all Additves binding to that Base will then be penalized in both Duration and Stats.
Lets also now discuss how the stat bonuses and penalties are calculated. If I use a 3 Base recipe with 1 Additve binding to each Base the result (Stats) will be exactly the same as a single Base recipe with 3 additives binding to that base with the exception of a shorter duration. Thats if everything is equal, distances to Bases etc. Remember how we calculated the Stat impact under Multiple Base Recipe Walkthrough. This works exactly the same. If I have 3 Additives giving me each a +PER when I use them to bind to a Base called Malt (Burnt) in a single base, single additive recipe. I now want to use all 3 against the same Base in a single Base recipe. What will the new PER value be. Its easy to calculate. Additive one gave me a +17 PER when I used it in the single base single Additive recipe. Additve two gave me a +15 PER and Additive 3 gave me a +20 PER. This mean the new PER value should be 17x17 + 15x15 + 20x20. Take the square root of that and you have the new PER value. 17x17=289, 15x15=225, 20x20=400. 289+225+400=984 and the rounded square root of 984 = 30. That means my new PER will now be 30.
As you can see in a multiple base recipe as well as in a multiple additive against a single base recipe the gains decrease as Additives are added. However its only in those Stat areas where Stats has already been increased by another Additive. Keeping that in minf one can now really start to play around... meaning... I have added an additve that will increase my PER and now would like to add an additve that will increase me STR. If the additive that I added to improve my PER did not impact on STR (No + or - in STR) I will get 100% of the improvement from my STR Additive even though its the 2nd Additive I'm adding to the same Base. Therefore when adding multiple Additives against bases one has to give even more consideration to every Additive added to the Recipe.
Example tests with cheap Ingredients:
Single Base, Single Additive
Base: Honey Additive: Malt (Burnt) Stats: STR -5, DEX -5, END 0, SPD 6, CON 0, FOC 0, PER 1
Base: Honey Additive: Malt (Raw) Stats: STR -7, DEX 1, END 0, SPD 7, CON 0, FOC 0, PER -7
Base: Honey Additive: Tilapia Fish Stats: STR 0, DEX 1, END 3, SPD 0, CON -2, FOC 0, PER -2
Now I add 2 of those Ingredients together against the same Base
Base: Honey Additives: Malt (Burnt), Malt (Raw) Stats: STR -9, DEX -5, END 0, SPD 9, CON 0, FOC 0, PER -7
Lets calc some stats according to the formula to cross check the formula: STR = -5x-5=-25 + -7x-7=-49 = -74 Rounded Square Root of -74=9 SPD = 6x6=36 + 7x7=49 = 85 Rounded Square Root of 85=9
<b>Now lets add one more Additve to that base BUT for END instead of SPD. Note that both Malt (Burnt) and Malt (Raw) did not influence END at all and therefore we should get 100% of the Tilapia Fish Stats improvement in the END stat. In turn the Tilapia Fish does not have a + or - in the SPD stat.
Base: Honey Additives: Malt (Burnt), Malt (Raw), Tilapia Fish Stats: STR -9, DEX -5, END 3, SPD 9, CON -2, FOC 0, PER -7
Note that the END went up to 3... exactly the same as when the Tilapia Fish was the only additive binding to the Base. In turn note that the adding of the Tilapia Fish didnt influence the SPD. Thats because 0x0=0 + 0x0=0 + 3x3=9 == 9 and the square root of 9 is 3. Once again the formula works fine. The only other thing to remember is that by adding too much bases into a recipe the recipe can be totally destroyed. I havent tested the exact limits of that due to never really needing that much Additves against a single base due to severe duration penalties.
Lets try a recipe which I did before and give you a run through on how it was calculated. This recipe will use 3 Bases and I will bind 3 additives to each base. My main focus was to try and get a high FOC and PER and at the same time get a good duration out of the recipe.
Because I planned to use 3 bases I decided that I will add 3 Additives to each base and change the ratio between Base and Additive to a 2:1 ratio to get a good duration. I also bargained on good bindings to Bases to increase the duration. I also decided to use on each base one Ingredient with both FOC and PER... one Ingredient with FOC and one Ingredient with PER. None of those Ingredients was allowed to have a minus(-) in either FOC or PER.
I decided to group all Additives with decent potency values together according to the (--), (++), (-+) and (+-) regions. This was to ensure that none of the 9 Ingredients I was going to use would clash with each other.

As I was using 3 Bases I had to decide which region I should drop. I had to have Salt in the recipe due to Salt allowing the recipe to last for 4 days before it is spoilt. Therefor my decision was up to one of the other 3 Regions to be dropped from this recipe. The decision was actually quite easy as in all regions I needed to have at least one Ingredient that would give me both FOC and PER. The only region where i didn't have stock for the FOC and PER Ingredient are the (++) Region. I therefore decided to drop that region from the recipe for now.
Having decided on the 3 Regions I now had to decide which Ingredient to use in the recipe and that was by determining the Bases and distances to the Bases.
In the (--) Region I decided to first try Oil as a base as it seemed to be pretty close to most of the ingredients on the Food Map. I was pretty happy with the distances and decided to stick with Oil for now. As 2 of the Ingredients was pretty close to each other from a distance point of view I decided to drop Crimson Lettuce from that list of Ingredients. Main reason there was lower Potency value than the other Ingredients. Dropping another Ingredient with a longer distance from the Base wouldn't help due to another Ingredient I had to use having almost the same distance from the Base. Remember all Ingredient would inherit the longest distance from the Base of those Additives used.
In the (-+) Region I had now to decide which Herbs to use and drop. Corsacia was out of the window due to no stock. The base here chose itself and I have to live with the slightly longer distances than desired as the benefits of Salt can not be ignored. I only wanted to use one FOC and PER Ingredient and that meant I decided on Sagar Ghota due to higher potency as well as shorter distance to Salt. Therefore Tsangto was illimunated. Chatinabrae therefore chose itself as its the only FOC Ingredient left to use. On the PER Ingredient I decided to use Purple Trintry due to higher potency than Houseleek and being below the distance of Chatinbrae (FOC herb). The distance is already quite far and I didn't want to sacrife even more distance by choosing Ginseng Root at this stage.
In the (+-) Region 3 herbs flew out of the window due to no stock. I therefore had to find a Base that would fit in with the remaining 4 herbs of which only one could be dropped, making the choise there a bit more difficult. I tried to find a base that doesnt have too low a Potency for a base... to try and increase duration and stats. I decided first to try Cat Nip as I spotted that it was located quite close to Meadowsweet... however after checking all distances I decided to drop Cat Nip as a base as the longest distance which all additive would inherit was too long to my liking. I now tried Malt (Burnt) and found that it didn't fit in perfectly BUT the next best base would be a Herb and I didnt want to waste a Herb as a base at this stage and decided to stick with Malt (Burnt). Meadowswwet chose itself due to the only FOC and PER Ingredient... not ideal but workable for now. Khokali also chose itself due to the highest potency of the FOC herbs on that list as well as shorter distance than Meadowsweet. In the PER department Covage chose itself as well due to the only PER herb I had in stock on that list.
Therfore The recipe is now in place. The only thing I had now to decided upon was the ratio. I knew by using 3 Additives per Base I had to give the ratio serious consideration. I made sure that I chose high potency herbs to increase duration and tried to keep distances short... once again to increase duration as well as improve stats. The last thing now it to not go with the 3:1 ratio but with a 2:1 ration as that should give me roughly an hour on duration.
