The Initiation into Art
To begin the initiation into art, visit a School or University of Art.
In order to pass the initiation, you must build a sculpture and collect 21 "interesting" votes of appreciation. A sculpture requires:
Once you have built the framework for a sculpture, you may place and position objects in it to create an artwork. Take care -- once you place an object in a sculpture, it cannot be taken back out again! Even if a sculpture is salvaged, only the linen, rope, and boards from the building cost can be recovered. You can replace an item by loading another into the same slot.
Any citizen may register a vote of appreciation on your sculpture. Once you have collected 21 "interesting" votes, visit your sculpture to complete the initiation.
The ease with which a sculpture can be made has resulted in some phenomenal works of art. Inspiration can be found lurking around on atitd.net's archives. Anyone with a good idea and a little time can make a beautiful sculpture.
Advanced Tips:
- Each base only supports 25 objects. You can use multiple sculpture bases to build a larger sculpture, but make sure you have a way of informing people which base to vote on.
- Wires/supports will be automatically included with objects that are floating in the air. These can sometimes be creatively incorporated into a sculpture.
- An item can be partially buried in the ground so that only a portion of the item sticks up above the surface.
- Don't build your sculpture in the middle of nowhere -- people can't vote on it if they don't see it! Build it close to a chariot stop, or near a road people often travel on, to quickly get your 21 votes. (Conversely, please take the lag factor into account. The city centers tend to be very crowded with buildings already, which means lots of lag for many. If you must build in a crowded area, please consider tearing your sculpture down as soon as you have passed the initiation.)
- A word to the wise about soliciting votes...Be careful about asking for people to come vote on your sculpture. The safest practice is to make the best sculpture you can in an area that gets some traffic and simply wait for it to pass without asking people to come vote. If you feel you must ask for others to come vote, consider doing it once in a fair-sized chat channel, and be prepared that some people may vote "eyesore". Asking every person who passes by to vote or asking for people to vote "interesting" is a sure way to irritate other players, which is ultimately not going to help you.
