The emitter theory

Throughout Egypt are certain coordinates, or sets of coordinates which act as microbe emitters. When you perform a yeast test in a given spot the resulting microbe ordering is determined by the distance between your beer kettle and these emitters. It is already known that microbes enter the kettle at different times, referred to as "seal times". It is therefore logical to assume that, if the emitter theory holds true, entry times should be dependent on the kettles distance from a given microbe emitter.

What appears to be random shifting in the microbe list when repositioning is rather a reflection of the fact that you have moved closer to some emitters while at the same time moving further away from others.

Testing the theory

Given a location we can see that microbe list-placement is consistent with this theory.

The microbe list at 363,-1021 in Karnak is as follows: Y1, Y82, Y64, Y57, Y89, Y56, A62, L100, Y49, Y50, Y32, L52, Y73, Y88, Y35, M39, L77, A94, Y26, A14, L36

Y32 was arbitrarily chosen as the "desired" microbe. At this point nothing is known as to which direction the nearest Y32 emitter is from the test location. In order to determine a general direction, a 4x4 coordinate test grid was laid down:

The ordering of the microbe lists in the result set can be used as a directional indicator for Y32.

Creating a second 4x4 grid, marking each location with Y32s corresponding list positioning from the test data reveals the following visual clue that Y32 is northwest.

Another set of yeast tests were run, this time focusing on coordinates located to the northwest of the original test site and with a 2-coordinate interval.

This test shows the the trend continues. As the test locations move further northwest, Y32 moves towards the left of the microbe list.

It is important to note that the microbe list can only be used as an indicator of relative distance. Keeping this in mind a chance was taken based on the number of leftward shifts Y32 had made over what distance. 256,-1024 was chosen as the next test coordinate.

256,-1024 M47, L60, Y32, Y42, A30, A86, Y80, Y89, A78, A6, Y17, M31, Y81, Y35, Y83, L85, L53, L69, A70, L92, Y11, Y74

Closer, but still not quite there. The original 4x4 grid testing indicated a northwest direction with a bias to the west. In such a small test area the precise angle of departure was not obvious so 4 coordinates surrounding 256,-1024 were chosen for the next tests.

Success. Y32 has been located as the premier microbe.

The band theory

Given two known fairly distant locations for Y16, could a third unknown location be determined somewhere in-between?

Y16 was known to exist at 1025,3455 and 1468,-3642. This is a shift of 0.0624 x-coordinates per y-shift. It was arbitrarily decided to test at a y-position of -1024. Using the 0.0624 modifier, 1305,-1024 was chosen as the test location. This location did yield Y16 in the results, although it was not the premier microbe at this location.

This is a single test and the results could very well have everything to do with chance. It is also known that Y16 does exist outside of this "band".

Magic 128s

It has been observed that microbe "shuffling" tends to be very strong at coordinates that are multiples of 128, particularly intersections of these coordinates.
