T4 Game Idea: Cattle

I'm carrying a petition about this in game... this page exists because the small petition window doesn't have enough room. I'd also love a translation if anyone wants to provide one!

Cattle were very important to the real ancient Egyptians - they were sacrificed and kept as sacred animals for many of the gods; some of the gods were shown with the ears or horns of cattle, especially Hathor; and they even referred to themselves as the "cattle of Ra". They have the potential to be far more interesting to keep when compared to our current livestock, and would make our Egypt feel more inhabited and realistic. Therefore, this is a proposal for the inclusion of cattle in T4 as a new kind of livestock.

Pastures

Cattle would not have to be fed like any of our current animals; rather, they will support themselves by grazing on grass. However, they must be kept in a pasture.

A pasture must be built entirely on grass, and would be a large building - at least the area of three camel pens for even a small number of cattle. (Optionally, there could be pastures of even larger sizes than the base one.) It wouldn't be expensive to build - just boards and maybe some wire for a fence - but at Pharaoh's option it might require maintainence to keep the cattle from escaping. A pasture can only sustain cattle for so long before it is overgrazed - perhaps a few real-time weeks if it is completely full. After this the cattle will starve if not moved to a new pasture, and the old pasture area can neither provide grass nor support growing any crops until it has had a chance to recover - one Egypt season for a fully depleted pasture. [If the torn-down-mine/pollution code can't handle this, it can simply be made impossible/illegal to tear down an unrecovered pasture. This would provide exactly the kind of player space competition that we know Pharaoh likes, which also being just plain different from all our other animals.]

Types of Cattle

Cattle will come in 4 varieties: cows (adult female), bulls (adult male), heifers (female calves), and young bulls (male calves).

Adult cattle of both genders eat grass from the pasture and produce dung. When slaughtered they produce significant quantities of leather and beef, and potentially oil. They might also, at Pharaoh's option, produce up to two horns each (both genders of ancient Egyptian cattle had horns), which could be carved into simple musical horns or tools. [Male sheep might also produce horns.]

Cows also produce cow's milk, though they would need to be intentionally milked, unlike camels.

Calves of both genders not only cannot reproduce, but rather than eating the grass, they drink the milk of one cow each, rendering it unavailable for collection. They produce less resources when slaughtered, but provide veal rather than beef. They of course eventually mature into adult cattle of the appropriate type.

In order to use cattle for Worship-related purposes, either for sacrifice of the animal at an altar, or ritual use of milk from them in ambrosias or around altars, Pharoah might optionally add various colors and markings of cattle, such as "pure red", "spotted", "scarab-marked", or "long-horned". Requirements for specific colors and markings were very typical of cattle used for religious purposes throughout the ancient world.

Herding Cattle

Cattle could be found roaming wild on the hills like sheep. However, since they are far too big to pick up, one would have to herd them. This would be much like chasing a gazelle, with two differences - first, that cattle move considerably slower and don't get tired, and second, that they would not move unless one is carrying some form of whip. Players would have the option to either make either a switch, cut from trees or some common bush with any knife, but likely to break; or a bullwhip, braided from several rawhide strips attached to a handle, and unbreakable. Optionally, herding bulls might risk the animal getting angry and trampling the character.

[This is to say, they would use modified gazelle code - gazelles are among the coolest things in the game, and more things ought to provide such interactions. "Trampling" would mean the bull runs some distance away or even escapes entirely, and the player gets fairly long stat timers.]

In order to breed, slaughter, or milk cattle, one would have to herd them within a short range of the pasture, at which point one would have the option (either on the animal or the pasture) to herd it inside. The pasture would provide an option to release an animal of a given type (and color/marking if such exist), so that players could herd them elsewhere, such as to a new pasture.

Keeping Camels and Sheep Useful

One potential objection to this idea is that it would reduce the willingness of players to keep sheep and camels. Even without cattle, many players consider the items sheep and camel produce nearly worthless, keeping them solely for leather and perhaps dung. So here are some option/ideas to keep camels and sheep worthwhile. Note these are all completely additional ideas; even if camels and sheep are unchanged cattle would be great to have.
