Prismatic Opticon

My Prismatic Opticon is located in the Funnybone Art Gallery at Karnak 1408 -1067, just south of the Chariot near the School of Harmony. It passed the Test on 23-Mar-2008.

I have designed an Opticon titled Neb Khau Ra. My skill with hieroglyphics is only very basic, but I was attempting to translate "All the Appearances of Ra". The phases of the opticon display some of the many forms of the Sun God.

Phases 1 through 10 attempt to dipict the sun disk moving from low in the East, to high Noon, to low in the West. I was a bit limited in this by the maximum lengths allowed in the opticon editor. The last phases are an animated solar system.

Phase Name Picture Notes
Phase 1 Benu Bird The Benu bird was a symbol of creation and rebirth. It was referred to as the 'Ba' or soul of Ra. Later Greek writers associated this bird with the Phoenix because of the idea of rebirth.
Phase 3 Khepri The scarab beetle pushes a ball of dung across the sand to lay its eggs in. Because of this behavior, the Egyptians associated the beetle with rebirth and the movement of the sun across the sky.
Phase 5 & 6 Aten Aten was the form of the sun god worshipped by the heretic king Akhenaten. The Aten is often depicted holding out an Ankh symbol to give life to the Pharoah and his family.
Phase 8 Eye of Horus The 'Udjat' Eye or Eye of Horus depicts the markings around a falcon's eye, and was used as an amulet of protection. The Sun gods Re and Horus are often depicted as falcon-headed men. The eyes of Horus were said to be the sun and the moon.
Phase 10 Sun Barque The movement of the sun across the sky was often depicted in terms of travelling in a boat. The sun boat moved through the heavens during the day, and through the underworld at night, to reappear in the East again the next day.
Phase 11 to 13 Solar System I have included the modern concept of the sun in a solar system model. The model includes the Sun, Earth, Moon, and the planets visible to the ancients: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.
