Sinai Travel Guide

Introduction

My journey to Sinai proved to be a fruitful two-week vacation from the Valley of the Kings, my home region. Sinai is one of Egypt's more isolated regions, lying in the northeast corner of the map, defined as the rectangular region bounded by 2170, 600 and 4200,3700. The Sinai region is the area east of the Red Sea. In the "real world" the Sinai peninsula is where Desert of Nomads is and ATITD’s Sinai would be the northwest corner of the Arabian peninsula. The Red Sea runs along the south and west with huge, nearly desolate desert regions to the north and east. The land is actually divided into two fertile lobes, East Sinai and West Sinai. West Sinai is more heavily populated .

Even though Sinai is remote, it is an active region, with many longtime players. The regional guildhall is The Greater Sinai Union located at 2234,5752. The region is a reliable producer of bauxite, along with Lake of Reeds. Fishing is only good in a couple of spots, the D3W camp in West Sinai and the necklace lakes in East Sinai. Mushrooms are found in a reasonable assortment, but not as reliably as in other regions of Egypt. There is an active horticulture program sponsored by the Egyptian Botanists guild.

The Fairgrounds

East and West Sinai are connected by a region know to residents as “The Fairgrounds”. We begin our journey at this network of crossroads because the first Sinai Megalopolis is to be built here. The fairground is a playground of the various disciplines. There are multiple dueling arenas, 7-blade arenas, 4 empty hand towers (EHT’s), 4 Set’s Ladders, a level 1 beetle garden, and a venery can be found under construction. The Sinai Conflict Guild is here and posts rankings of members. There are 3 other guilds here that link residents to trade and commerce. To the south are a Pyramid of the Deep Oceans and a Pyramid of the Fertile Land. Just south of that is a small fertile lake region, home to an extensive camp by Dakai and Likekai. There is also a white sand site at 2680, 4811. Notable sculptures here are the Library, Egyptian Spider, A Fish Tail in the Desert, and Dinner for 2. The last sculpture, by Petis, is a quaint table set with vegetables, meat, napkins, and candles. Inhoptet has devised a fiendishly clever EHT, requiring 13 steps for me to finish. There is a Festival Altar to the east at 2875, 5025 for Isis and Hathor. One can easily see why this spot was chosen for the Sinai Megalopolis.

Western Sinai

We will venture first through Western Sinai. Follow me in a clockwork fashion as we walk the road west of the fairgrounds, along the fertile expanse that borders the Red Sea. Not very far we come to a road going north, bordered by a creek and several small ponds that serves as the campsites for members of Nihilists of the Nile, Fellowship of the Nile (FoN), Lost in Egypt, and Hymn’s Guild. There is also a School of Conflict and U Arch further up. Just north of the School of Conflict is a little pond. This is home to one of the oldest guilds in the game, Scholars of Thoth. They claim several GMs and longtime players as their members, many from earlier beta versions. There are many scattered mines in what would otherwise be an area known for its beautiful rolling green hills.

Passing further westward, this eager traveler stumbles on 3 more Set’s Ladders just to the south of the road, overlooking the Red Sea. The first 2 paid out in sand. The last paid out in potash, but alas was empty. Frustrated, I trekked onward to the School of Worship, where I registered my vote for demi-pharoah at the local voting booth. To the west of this was an array of ore infernos, mines, and a public deep well! I stuck around for a bit to drill petroleum, using the strength recipe from the public kitchen.

On up the road to the School of Art, we pass by a 240 cubit cut stone obelisk. There is an altar for Ritual of plant growth at 2425, 5070. To the north of this is an expansive valley occupied in its entirety by the Children of Horus at 2217, 5233. The guild’s 20 members have constructed facilities that are modern and plentiful. There is an impressive sheep farm with no less than 17 pens by the road. Past the school of architecture is a little creek originating from the southeast, near the U Art. Of note along its course is a public level-12 zinc mine at 2319, 5445.

Continuing our run north, just past the School of Body, is a river running through a fertile valley to the east. The best fishing in all of Sinai can be had all along this river. We will revisit this spot in a bit. On up the road, near the U Body is a small collection of good art. My favorite one is a fairly good representation of a Christmas tree by Yeshua. The Greater Sinai Union has its guildhall here. At the river here, is the guild Desert’s Edge, guarding the entrance into Sinai from DoN. The river here is also a source of fish, although not as reliable as the river to the south. Across the river and to the north is the impressive 11-tier, 506-block Pyramid of the Living Forest, at 2234, 6187, in the shadow of Mt. Sinai. The pyramid is encircled with various Roses of Ra from all over Egypt, and was organized by KingRamsesII. Mihe has a page devoted to it on her web site at www.mihe.org/projects/polf/pyramid_pic.html.

To the northeast of Per-Atum, in the desert, is a tug arena. The road goes east, winding its way through the northern desert of Sinai, back into the lush, green, river valley where we find a School of Architecture and the U Conf. To the west of U Conf is a sandy island in the middle of a river that serves as a crossroads for this part of Sinai. We will continue west, back into the fertile river valley we mentioned earlier that is so rich in fish. There is a large clay pit here, and Phagrus can be had to the east of it. To the west any kind of fish can be had in good quantities. Meandering all along this river are the extensive and modern facilities of the Disciples of the 3-Way (D3W) at 2417, 5611. Their hall is decorated lavishly for a 7-member guild. One of their members, Taarka, has devised a challenging 6-block EHT near the clay pit. Zanix, another member of D3W, built this EHT. The valley is bordered to the south by nearly impassable mountains, except for a cut at 2468, 5563. Zanix has lined the cut with special Rose of Ra bulbs. He is quite the horticulturist, and has recently gained recognition throughout Egypt with his strains of sand bloom.

Exiting this pass, I come upon the great plain of the U Art, lined with statues of cats and blue green avenues. Here, I have built a mini-camp for members of my home guild The Way. A small crucifix informs passersby that we exist as a guild of Christian chat and fellowship for all Egypt. Next to my camp is a pond good for perch and some abdju that I share with the Followers of Aha. The U Art also hosts a nice opticon by Gluten. The Egyptian Botanists have their guild here at 2519, 5393. They are known for producing Rose of Ra strains for Egypt. The guildhall is dedicated to the memory of Hatchepsud. There is a trade center here for bulbs called “Flower Shop”.

Traveling east on the road, there is a limestone deposit. There are also some small ponds to the northeast serving as home for a few solo’ers. Farther east are the U Lead and U Thought as well as the Sinai pyrotechnics stadium, Falling Embers. You cannot miss the large green circle in the Sinai desert. The stadium is one of the coolest in Egypt, with a round circular field of hills, granite, grass, and a moat.

Back on the road, going south, we pass through a large fertile plain with a small lake and a river. This lake is home to the guild Order of the Wolf, Ram, & Hart. They have emblazoned the plain with the letters “OWRH” using Roses of Ra, best viewed with the cartographer’s cam. Scattered camps and mines populate the remainder of the plain, with the road traveling south ending at the fairgrounds.

Eastern Sinai

We enter East Sinai by the road leading out of the Fairgrounds. To the north in the mountains is a dueling arena. There is a Hecket’s rake desk not too far on the road. Then I encountered several works of art near the S Art, but quartz appears to be over utilized in them. One notable exception is “Egypt Bowling” by Muzikmn, which is simply grass bowling pins and a rock bowling ball with a lane made of boards. Another is called “In the Name of Love” and is a convincing hand made from silt by SerraLightHeart. If you go just a little south of the road on the hill at 2970, 4910 you will see a graveyard erected by Meriaten for players that have quit. There are 14 decorated tombstones, complete with flowers, vases, and candles. She also runs “Meriaten’s Gem Mine Emporium” at 3047, 5075; which offers public gem mines. However, all were collapsed upon my visit. There are several scattered camps in the fertile region just to the north of the road and several guilds, notably The Loose Knit Community of Semi-Soloers, Bank of Sinai, Disciples of Solitude, The Polkapig Guild (which has an invitation to membership in both French and English), Fanta-Z, and Shiraz. There is a nice suspension bridge sculpture built by Enaj crossing the river here, along with a fishing pier. At 3130, 5070, FribianSaint has made a HUGE road sign out of ore sculptures saying, “Valley of Shiraz” in honor of his guild location. The letters must be 40-50 cubits high each. This area is also endowed with a unique river in the shape of a necklace, with a small lake for an amulet at the bottom of the chain. Residents call this “Necklace Lake”, and there is some good fishing here. To the east of the top of this necklace is the exclusive French guild, Le Place de verite at 3334, 4996.

The road travels into central East Sinai with the guilds of Medjay, Bacchus of Egypt, and Tutankamaton. The Lost Ones of Egypt have a massive camp here at 3611, 4997, encompassing nearly all of the area. It was one the guilds from beta 1, having been in Egypt since the beginning of time. Inhoptet lives there and claims to be the first to have settled east of the Necklace Lake. He also founded the East Sinai Construction Company in the desert to east for activities that cause pollution. This is also one of the few regions that yield silver. Bauxite can be dug up at 4200, 5300.

The desert runs for a while to the south up to the Red Sea with some occasional fertile patches. The area is essentially barren except for U Lead and a conflict arena. The U Lead is a little unique in that it is the first university I have encountered with a working fountain in the middle of it. I was told that for a while a solo’er lived near southern U Lead but quit. There are few trees here, even in the fertile regions. There is a site for sulfurous water at 3200, 4500.

Departing Remarks

Sinai has many experienced, active, hard-working players. Students of all seven disciplines will find something of interest within this desert oasis. I was able to get over 70 facets of acro on my visit there. There are several masters and many willing and limber players. I was disappointed by the scarcity of opticons. I ran across only 2, and was told another was stored in a tent awaiting the erection of the Megalopolis. Western Sinai was a very interesting place to run through for all its scenic beauty. I would live here if you want to benefit from the friendship of many experienced players. East Sinai has its own beauty but would be a better home for those seeking solitude or the exploitation of rarer minerals such as silver and bauxite. The Sinai Megalopolis will not only benefit its residents but all of Egypt. Both the casual traveler and the astute trader should not neglect this unique region of Egypt.
