The theory I was using before tombs was 1 point for an EHT, 4 points for a venery, +1 point if you did one of each. I believe the cross-over points (the last factor in that equation) is going to complicate matters substantially. Teppy has commented that the formula isn't easy to explain, so it lends a bit of credibility to it at least. Looks like tombs count for about 3 points from preliminary data, but that would be very odd considering how long they normally take to solve. Focus 3 is somewhere around 50 points, not known exactly where - Tanith
My personal thought was that EHT and Tombs are cumulative for focus purposes. IE 7 total of either for +1, 28 total of either for +2. --Dragyn-- nope, this doesn't work at all according to the data below, see my results below, 2nd focus point at 7 EHT, 7 tomb--aoife
A guess at a formula for calculating focus; focus = floor(min(sqrt(EHTs/7), 2) + min(sqrt(Veneries/7), 2) + min(sqrt(Tombs/7), 2), 1). --Teti
I have heard announcements of Focus gain in guild chat that indicate our not needing the "min" function in the formula. There do seem to be benefits after judging your 28th EHT, Venery, or Tomb. They are just small benefits, since Focus gains from one puzzle would come at 7, 28, 63, 112, 175, 252, and 343. This would make the formula =floor(sqrt(EHTs/7)+sqrt(Veneries/7)+sqrt(Tombs/7),1) with a new sqrt(x/7) addend for each new Thought test. This formula would, however, be inconsistent with one of Skulk's data points. Is there a reason to believe that the limit is 2 Focus per puzzle? Also, either formula implies that the easiest way to get 7 Focus is to do 7 of each Thought puzzle (or maybe more Tombs and fewer Veneries, given the time involved). --Zubon
The main reason for me to add a limit of 2 per test was that it fits TpcT:s data, going from focus 4 to 5 (the only data point with any judging above 28 at the time). I also thought it reasonable to expect a hard limit to force people to play different types of puzzles. --Teti
That also fits Pharaoh's announcement that it is now possible to reach focus 7 (with the release of the Test of the Bijou), implying that it wasn't possible before when we only had three Thought tests. --Nephte
Teti's formula (including the min) works for my bump numbers to 6 focus as well, where not including the min doesn't. Should we consider saying the formula is right and getting rid of the raw data? --TpcT--
I'd still like to explore the data a bit more as we all progress, but I admit for any practical purpose; it doesn't matter. The formula is right. -- Skulk
Pharaoh just posted a fragment of the formula during the meeting in Kemet:
var acc;Does this match the data? -- Alya
acc+=bound(0,sqrt(1429*Place.p_ScoreSkill[EmptyHand]),200);
Pharaoh: That is the formula. Divide by 100 to get the # of focus points.
It's very close to the formula we have. The rounding is slightly different. Where we divide by 7, he multiplies with 1429 (which is approximately 10000/7) and compensates for the extra factor of 10000 by dividing by 100 later. This means our formula will be off by about one part in 20000. I don't think we'll even be able to measure that difference because of the cap of 2 focus points per puzzle type. -- Nephte
What I would like to find out, and what this fragment unfortunately doesn't show, is whether there's a maximum of Focus 7 or whether it can go higher like Perception can. Once we have seven Thought tests, people could potentially get Focus 14. I guess we'll find out the hard way. -- Nephte
I don't understand the formula, but does 28, 3, 28, 28, fit? Also has anyone ever tried this combo? - Nia
