Vegetables

Overview

There are five different types of vegetables: cabbages, carrots, garlic, leeks, and onions.

Vegetables are grown from seeds. Every University of Worship will give each citizen one packet of four seeds of a random type. You may visit as many universities as you wish to accumulate many seeds.

All vegetables are grown in the same fashion: Plant a seed in the appropriate terrain, and water the plant that appears. Every time the plant grows larger, water it again. Eventually, the plant will reach maturity and may be harvested. If a plant is not watered, it will shrink; if it shrinks too far, it will die leaving behind a single seed. If a plant is overwatered (watered twice before it grows), it may die (going back to a seed), depending on the variety of vegetable.

The vegetable yield per plant harvested depends on a number of factors. At the moment, all plants yield seven more vegetables than before, due to the construction of seven Pyramids of the Fertile Lands. An additional +15 to yield can be obtained for onions, cabbages, and leeks by means of the Ritual of Plant Growth. All conditions related to yield (location, time of day) may vary from person to person, and may vary as the seasons change in game.

Under normal circumstances, a vegetable plant will yield one seed when harvested (returning the seed used to plant the plant). Certain techniques (described below) can produce additional seeds. In addition, plants will very rarely produce two seeds regardless of conditions.

Cabbages

Cabbages are grown on grassy soil.

Cabbage yield varies with location, according to rules which are not well understood. Yields decrease when there are several people standing near the plant; for best results, grow cabbages alone.

If there many people (16 or more) standing near a cabbage plant, and a female character harvests the plant, it will produce more than one seed.

Carrots

Carrots are grown on grassy soil.

There are north-south bands of high-yield carrot growth running through Egypt. The center of each band will produce the highest yield, with harvests trailing off to the east and west. The peaks of each band are approximately 200 coordinates apart. The bands move, east to west, about one coordinate per minute.

To maximize carrot harvests, locate a high-growth band by traveling east and testing growth periodically, and then follow the peak of the band west as it moves.

If a carrot is planted next to a mushroom, it will produce additional seeds. (The mushroom must be naturally growing; you cannot drop a mushroom on the ground to get more carrot seeds.)

Garlic

Garlic is grown on sandy soil.

Garlic yield varies with location. Garlic tends to have very low yields; it is unusual for a garlic plant to produce more than one deben of garlic. (Or eight, factoring in the pyramid bonus.)

Yields decrease when there are several people standing near the plant; for best results, grow garlic alone.

It is rumored that there is a special method to reproducing garlic seeds: Find one of your personal "garlic seed spots" (different for every player) and grow a single garlic plant there after having not grown any for 10 minutes. This is unverified as of now. There is no verified means of reproducing garlic seeds. There is an interesting challenge associated with the secret of garlic.

Leeks

Leeks are grown on sandy soil.

Leek yield varies with location, according to rules which are not well understood. Yields decrease when there are several people standing near the plant; for best results, grow leeks alone.

If there many people (16 or more) standing near a leek plant, and a male character harvests the plant, it will produce more than one seed.

Onions

Onions are grown on sandy soil.

Onion yield varies with location and with the groundwater level--the higher the groundwater, the more onions. Groundwater level can be determined with the Ecology 2 skill. Growing onions will slowly lower groundwater levels over time; if the location is then left undisturbed, the groundwater will eventually return to normal (100). Onions are unique in not dying when overwatered, and also in that they grow predictably rather than a random amount of time after watering.

If onions are grown in an area with very low groundwater (less than 40), they will produce more than one seed. By this point you will usually not be harvesting many onions however. In my experience, onions occasionally produce 2 seeds, in addition to the onions, when grown in an area with 100 groundwater. Also, groundwater only appears to be depleted when many onions(8 perhaps), are grown at the same time.
