The best way to get a feel for pyrotechnics is to roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty. So arm yourself with some firebricks, some gunpowder and a few cheap stars and see what you can do!
Name:Ephemeral
My first ever entry in a pyro contest - how proud I was of it! It was exquisite - honed to perfection, test fired over and over and over again to get the timing spot on, the stars selected carefully, even buying some metal at the goods to get just the right colour! Finished last. Rock bottom. BFH, as Jim Bowen would say. How could everyone else be so wrong??? Couldn't they recognise artistic perfection when they saw it? Still, at least Kaotika said he liked the timing :). I got the ingredients together again recently to fire this again, and I still like it - it's my little baby! But I guess it is a bit basic really...

Ah yes. After failing miserably in the previous contest with 'Ephemeral', I said to myself "right, I gave them beauty, they didn't want that". Actually, the language I used was a bit more choice than that :) - in fact, the working title for this mortar was 'Philistines'. So I decided to give 'em what they want, load it up with gunpowder and then blow it all to kingdom come in a big messy explosion and gather in the votes. But somewhere along the way, I found my artistic principles again and toned it down a bit. Not my favourite mortar, but one I ended up quite liking - specially the fans at the end. There's just something about rusty comets and blue thunder that works for me!

Oh come on! - it wasn't THAT bad surely!!! My entry in Emmanuels 50-star pyro contest. I was a bit sceptical about the contest, but it turned out very good. I hope we have some more of these contests in Tale 3 - maybe I'll use more than 200 gunpowder next time :)

Name:Circle the wagons....
Position: 1st - and a pyro pass :)
Circle the wagons was where I decided to try to take my fireworks away from the vertical axis. By this I mean that I'd concentrated on using hovering platforms from a central, vertical firework. But this can get boring after a while, so I looked at what other people were doing to get some inspiration - poppers! Almost invisible in the night sky, these can be used to set up a surprise from afar. So in this mortar, while the usual to-ing and fro-ing is going on in the centre, I used the launch of the central star to hide a ring of 20 poppers sent outwards to deliver a surprise at the end. The rest was just adjusting the timing and trajectories to get the stars to co-ordinate well - and I must say I was pretty pleased with the end result. Oh, and bored everyone rigid at work last Monday telling them over and over that Pharaoh put this in his beta fireworks bonus package :). Maybe I should get out more.....
