The Basic Theory

The current theory of the relationship between the spirits and the drops of essence produced is:

The amount of essence produced will the same if the sum of the product of amount of spirit multiplied by type is the same
The quality of the spirit dictates the maximum amount of essence you will get, with Fire being a maximum of 6 drops
The lowest quality spirit dictates the overall spirit quality level. So if you use a combination of Fire and Water spirits, the maximum value will be the value for Water.
You must use exactly 10 debens of Spirits

The Theory in More Detail

First, we start by assigning some values to the various spirit types, like so:

Spirit Value
Fish 90
Mineral 80
Vegetable 70
Fruit 60
Grass 50
Grain 40
Worm 30
Wood 20
Grey* 10

 * - Grey spirits are both a type and a quality

The actual values aren't important, so long the progress from the lowest to highest temperature spirit in increasing order. Using multiples of ten is easy to keep straight and gives some wiggle room. You could use 1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,56 if you really wanted.

Now, for a given material, the same amount of essence will be produced as long as the sum of products of amount times type of spirit are the same. For example, if a material produces 6 drops of essence with 10 Grass Spirits of Fire (10 x 50 = 500), then it will also produce 6 Drops of Essence with 5 Fruit Spirits of Fire and 5 Grain Spirits of Fire (5 x 60 = 300, 5 x 40 = 200, 300+200 = 500).

Theory Stout Palm

Essence Spirits Value Outcome
Stout Palm 4 Grass, 6 Grain 200+240=440 6
Stout Palm 4 Vegetable, 6 Worm 280+180=460 4
Stout Palm 2 Vegetable, 8 Worm 140+240=380 C
Stout Palm 4 Vegetable, 6 Wood 280+120=400 2
Stout Palm 8 Grass, 1 grain, 1 grey 400+40+10=450 2
Stout Palm 8 Grass, 2 wood 400+40=440 6
Stout Palm 8 Grass, 1 grain, 1 wood 400+40+20=460 4
Stout Palm 3 Fish,5 Grey,1 Vegetable, 1 Grass 270+50+70+50=440 3

In the last entry you will note that the total produced is 3 rather than 6, even though the value is 440. This is because the "grey" quality only allows a maximum of 3 drops of essence.

Theory Cerulean Blue

Essence Spirits Value Outcome
Cerulean Blue 10 Grass 500 H
Cerulean Blue 10 Worm 300 H
Cerulean Blue 10 Wood 200 4
Cerulean Blue 8 Wood, 2 Worm 160+60=220 2
Cerulean Blue 9 Wood, 1 Worm 180+30=210 3
Cerulean Blue 9 Wood, 1 Grey 180+10=190 2

Theory Lead Salts

Essence Spirits Value Outcome
Lead Salts 10 Grain 400 H
Lead Salts 10 Worm 300 H
Lead Salts 10 Wood 200 5
Lead Salts 9 Wood, 1 Worm 180+30=210 4
Lead Salts 9 Wood, 1 Grain 180+40=220 2

Theory for sweetspot (Fire)

The more you are of, the less you get
fire has a range of 110, air of 130 and so on

Thanks to McArine for the research
