Dowsing Guide

The Dowsing tech, learned at a University of Body, gives you the ability to assemble a dowsing rod. Level 7 is required (Skill can be learned prior to level 7 by teaching. I was level 5. BubbaHotepJunior).

MUST have a dowsing rod in your inventory. This gives you a new action icon in that appears in upper right hand portion of the screen.

Currently working on my own little page for dowsing, http://perl.atitd.wiki/wiki/tale3/Users/Boone/Mining_Table, comments appreciated. /boone

Dowsing starts focus timer of 10 minutes

Dowsing results are reported in your main chat if you have the Utility - interface - Use console... option checked. If you have your chats minimized the result will not be posted in the main chat.

It is also possible to get a message of "You detect a vein of {some ore} somewhere nearby". I got this message with copper ore while having 29 PER. I dowsed again in the same spot with only 9 PER, and got the sand message. Maybe PER affects distance you can detect ores at along with what ores you can detect. -Ancano

Note: With 0 Perception, Dowsing over a Tin vein resulted in "You find nothing but sand" which would lead me to believe it will only find items just above your perception level or not at all. -- Malard

Question: If I have 0 Perception, and drop a mine over a vein, will I get the ore, or will I just get sand? -- Oofafwet
Answer: ore

Notes on Vein Locations

Public Dowsing Efforts are under way in many regions. Please contribute as you are able.

Karmak Specific(?): Iron runs E-W, Copper runs NNE-SSW. Copper can overlap Iron and Iron will show on a dowse. ~Greyhawk

Copper vein running NNE-SSW also found in Sinai. ~Aoreias

Copper vein running WNW-ESE found in Cradle of the Sun. ~Tairnyn

Iron vein found running NNW-SSE in Lower Egypt (2 different veins). Random copper spots found, but no related map-able vein. ~Bort

Copper vein capped into Tin, not able to be detected at 2 per. ~Aoreias

Iron is in a vein that DOES end, see attachment "IronCap.png". Actually it was capped by Tin and continues past it!

Copper vein running NNE-SSW found in UE. Iron vein ran straight E-W in Qatara. ~Matk

Notes on mineral shapes and characteristics

Impressions from FaceAnkh, Hassim and AuronXIII. Please add to and correct.

General

Copper and iron are long thin veins (hundreds of coords long, maybe 5 coords wide), and very widespread. They can go any direction and curve. Aluminum is as long, but seems to be wider.

Where copper and iron veins cross, there is often another mineral(tin). This is NOT always the case though. See DowsingTin image. Red was iron, green was copper.

Zinc is a roughly 75 coordinate radius ring, with a small lead spot at the center and a large lead spot north-east of the circle.

Lead and Tin are spots, large enough for approx 4x4 mines.

It seems that the Upper Egypt silver vein is capped in gold and may also be in Kush.

Strontium deposits form four-point diamonds -- each point of the diamond is very small, frequently supporting only one mine. The points are located at the North, South, East, and West compass points, and the distance between diametrically-opposed points is 50 coords. -InambaGuum

Titanium and Antimony

Titanium appears in a large anticlockwise outward spiral, with the vein being less than 8 coords wide and the whole spiral covering an area of approximate 200x200 coords. At the centre of titanium spirals is a small patch of antimony (about 4 mines).

The spiral appears to be reasonably well matched by an Archimedean spiral:
