You must have a fishing pole with you to fish.
Stand close enough to water to see the fish icon, and click it, and you will fish.
Fishing with a basic fishing pole works best at night, after about 6 pm and before about 8 am. In some situations you may catch fish in daylight hours, but it's unusual. If you get a message about the water being dead, move away, or try at a different time. If the message mentions ripples in the water, keep trying there or nearby, as you may catch fish. Everyone can catch the same types of fish at any particular location. However, the catch rate depends on location and time of night, and varies between people. The size of fish caught is dependent on your Speed attribute and can be affected by cooking.
Note: Sometimes the water reports cycle from dead to ripples to yielding fish over a 5-10 minute cycle. You can catch fish immediately after multiple dead water reports. However, in most situations that's not optimal fishing strategy. Where it might make sense is if it's a spot that yields the rarer fish.
The following types of fish exist:
Common | Uncommon | Rare | Very Rare | Special Rod Reqd |
Carp | Abdju | Oxyrynchus | Serpent Fish | Malapterus (sp?) |
Perch | Phagrus | Tiger Fish | ||
Catfish | ||||
Tilapia | ||||
Chromis |
Fish gather in fishing bands. Those bands run from NE to SW across the map and are 210 coordinates wide. They oscillate about 30 coordinates NW to SE (sidewise) which changes the type of fish that you will find at a particular location.
Bands contain the following fish types from NW to SE (moving across the band):
Which fish is usually given by a certain location (X, Y) can be computed as follows:
(X - Y) mod 866
Fish bands have result between 0 and 210. Values between 836 and 865, as well as 211 and 240 can also contain fish due to the oscillation of the bands.
Carp and Serpent Fish are close to 0 end, Chromis and Phagrus towards the 210 end.
For those with python:
def fish(x, y): return (x - y) % 866
def band(x, y): return fish(x, y) / 16
>>> band(1357, -3879) 2
Band 2 is Carp/Oxy/Perch from above (numbering from 0)
Three other types of poles may be won as prizes in competitions:
You can cook fish in Firepit, and will get grilled fish. You can eat this (one at a time) from the special menu; you will then get +2 endurance for the next three TeppyMinutes. Grilled fish are portable! It does not matter what kind of fish you use.
