Instant Run Off Voting

Law Text

In the case that the number of individuals running in the final round of Demi Pharaoh is greater then two, the system of Instant Run-Off Voting shall be used.

1.) Voters shall rank candidates in order of preference.

E.G.: If in a three way race A, B and C are running and I prefer A the most and C the least I will rank my candidates from A = 1, B = 2, C= 3.

2.) In the case that no candidate receives an overall majority of first preferences the candidates with fewest votes are eliminated one by one, and their votes transferred according to their second and third preferences (and so on), until one candidate achieves a majority.

a. For the purposes of this law “overall majority” and “majority” are defined where any candidate has received more then 50% of the total votes cast.

Discussion

Much of this law was lifted from this source. Please read about it first.

IRV has the advantage of allowing so called “third party” members or “long shots” a better chance at winning. In simple majority elections, voters tend to vote strategically as well as according to their preferences. So, from the above, they might not actually vote for A but for B instead because B will do the least harm and A is seen as not able to defeat C. When many people enter into this sort of behavior, and they often do, it can change the outcome of elections.

No one loses. That is the important thing. Even if the persons preferred candidate ends up at the bottom of the list, as the person feared, the candidate gets eliminated in the next round of voting and their vote is redistributed, in this case to B.

After A gets eliminated, some of those votes will be distributed to B (such as in my preference) and some to C. Thus, candidates have an incentive to appeal to all voters and not a fringe of population.

This allows for more accurate voting preferences.

Please try and separate your post from corrections of the law as you read them, the theory of the law, and any other objections you may have.

If you are interested in carrying this law contact Etruscus. I have rough French skills and almost no German, as an FYI if you decide to chat me in one of those languages. It will be a few days before I write carry a petition.
