Gravel is created by smashing medium stones with a sledgehammer. Holding a sledgehammer, a stone on the ground can be smashed, breaking it into smaller and smaller stones and, eventually, gravel. Stones break randomly, so the amount of gravel that can be gotten from a single medium stone varies, but the average is about 50.
That average seems a little low. I just got 677 gravel (and a headache) from 10 medium stone. -Aidenna
809 from 10 stones. -Taemon
9 gravel from 1 stone at 0 str, 0 dex; 102 gravel from 1 stone at 20 str, 20 dex. Could use more data, but might indicate something. -Cyall
I have the impression that stones yield more gravel when you start out with more than one at a time. Cyall's stuff is good too. Shall we make a table? Yay! Tables! -Taemon
Law of averages, I'd say, but by all means, a table is good. I believe that if there's 55-60 gravel per medium stone, the more you do, the more it will tend towards that average. ...but naturally, I may be wrong. --Sedelyan

You know. Maybe it just IS random.
Don't pound stones into gravel near buildings, water or cliffs. Stones ignore gravity, and can often roll into areas where humans can't reach them.
Don't right click your mouse button after smashing (either through key or menu selection) as you will lose the entire stone. DEVs aware of bug, but can't fix it. - SanderDolphin
Medium stones will break into progressively smaller stones as they are smashed repeatedly. From largest to smallest:
Gravel cannot be smashed further; it can only be picked up.
When a stone is smashed, it will usually break into 1-3 pieces of the next smaller size, each piece flying off in a random direction. Other times the stone will stay the same size, fly off in a random direction, and leave 1 gravel where it was struck.
I find that by dropping 3-10 medium stones at your feet then smashing them, the resulting stones form a ring around you. After gathering the stone, you drop each size at your feet then smash, stones going in every direction, but form a circle around you. Repeat until all stones are gravel. This technique works well when one person smashes the stones and one or two others gather and feed the stones to the smasher. Hutintut
Queueing pickup while your avatar is still smashing stones...well, suffice to say that if you're smashing 40-50 at a time, you can wind up queueing half the resulting circle before you're done with the other. --Sedelyan
