Suggestions

How can we make the wiki better? If you've got advice, comments, or complaints, add them in here.

For the curious, the source code to the wiki (as well as other tools we've written) can be browsed at http://atitd.centauri.org/viewcvs/atitd/trunk/ (somewhat outdated now)

T3 suggestions and comments

Can someone who knows the history please add a page for all the bannings that have occurred in each Tale (as well as can be remembered). It should include the Tale, the name of the DP, the name of the banned, and a brief description of what the person did or the rationale behind the ban. It could be linked to the DP test page. This information would be very helpful to both candidates and voters in understanding the role of DP. - Rashanti

Giving other tales a different colour might prevent us browsing all kinds of information that turns out to be from another tale. If you don't look at the url, you simply don't notice. Also, I'd like to have Buildings and Resources added to the link line. - Taemon

UE's research page for Chromatic Touch is not correct according to the needs listed at the University. Please fix as it wont let us update this section. Thanks - Auditrix

Could you escape the ampersand in the recent changes link, please? "/tale3?action=rss&days=1" - Alethe

when searching let the results be listed like the wiki from T2, for way faster finding the tihing you are looking for.

Make the Calender button on the homepage larger so people will now it is there to use.

Make a second quick link line under the first that includes "Guilds | Users | Buildings | Resources"

It seems that someone is adding techs to research that are not yet available. When I try to state not available, it wont let me do it. Whoever is doing this, could you either remove the techs not available or allow us to say NOT AVAILABLE. It is very confusing to many to run to Uni to donate and not have the tech available to donate to. ~ Auditrix

Would have expected the colour scheme of the wiki pages to change somewhat from tale to tale :) - Mim

Add Buildings to "Home | Atlas | Guides | Tests | Research | Index | Recent Changes | Preferences" - Daru

Some edits are eating the spaces in the timer sections. Completed on 2006/06/09 23:15 UTC ends up as Completedon2006/06/0923:15UTC. - Khleevi

Can we add tr sign for Turkish translations for the tag $TRANSLATION. - Glamdring

Add Skills and Techs to "Home | Atlas | Guides | Tests | Research | Index | Recent Changes | Preferences" - Kaayru

Done - mjr

Would be nice to have the rest of the maps imported (probably on your todo). - Mau

Allow raw HTML? ---Zatarg---

One of the driving points of a wiki is to keep the markup simple. This means you sacrifice the ability to do certain things, but also means that people don't have to understand each others' HTML in order to make changes. That being said, the wiki does allow one or two pieces of useful HTML markup (see Formatting). - mjr

Yeah, but can't we have both? ---Zatarg---

Clintonio I agree with Zatarg here, allowing pure HTML would be nice, or even a restricted form.

How about access keys so we can save with Ctrl+S, go home with Ctrl+1, etc?

For the atlas, have the alt="" part of the Indicator <img> have the coordinates of that Indicator? Currently, the alt is set to " " (a space), which gives a NBSP 'tool-tip' (at least in MSIE 6.0). Putting in the coordinates will help on the 'Big Region' map, like when working with Fennecs or other points that are close together. You can highlight the image and see the coords, when the data display is too far to the top to be seen. Also, this may work differently in other browsers for mouse-overs on images. It will probably need to be browser-compatible, but ALT works for IE. -- Bahaumaut

How about option bubbles under the search feature that indicate whether you are a. searching page titles only or b. searching page text (how it works currently) Sometimes you just want to find the general page for a resource very quickly without having to browse through many results.

I think there should be a help me page for players that have questions and doesnt know how to call a GM and no one aroung that player knows. Or if the player just came and has no mentor this page would cantain names of all people that are willing to help any new player or mentor them in that case.

Could the "This change is a minor edit." be the default? I'd rather see people who aren't paying attention do minor edits without descriptions than inserting commas or changing capitalization end up being Major revisions. This is quite annoying if you use the "differences" view to determine if you actually need to read the page again. :)

I feel your pain - I have the same problem - but I think that will just result in the reverse problem, since no one will be more likely to click the "This a major edit" checkbox. I wonder if perhaps a simple filter could be implemented to check for minor edits, and automatically mark them as such. -- MJR

I'd like the "differences" section of the page (at the top, only if you have the option set) to show me all the changes *since I last viewed* -- as long as I have a user account, and I'm logged in, anyway. Since most people don't pay attention to the 'minor edit" and if I'm gone for a weekend and there's two major edits, I'd like to see all the changes. Perhaps each user account could maintain a list of "what version was last seen" -- if none, then show most uptodate version straight, no differences shown. But if I last saw version 15, andi t's currently version 23, I'd like the page I would see if I clicked "compare other revisions" and chose "compate 15 to 23" and viewed. It'd make figuring out which information is actually new WAAAY easier. If you're interested in help implementing some of these requests (particularly mine:P), I'm an experienced coder and do it for a living. Happy to help. :) --Leetah

Definitely a useful feature, though it would take a fair amount of work to implement. I'll keep it in the back of my head, and try it out if I get some cycles. If you want to try to hack at yourself, by all means, come up with a proposal. We do make the wiki source available (see above).

Would it be possibe to have a zoom feature on the maps?

Not quite a zoom, but the current map code allows for multiple maps. -- MJR

Formatting instructions need to include linking. Also, if some simple way could be put in to link from the main wiki to private guild sites, and from private guild sites back to the main wiki (especially user pages), that would be great.

I've added interwiki links on the guild wikis for the main wiki. For example, use [[Tale2:Fishing]] to link to the main wiki's Fishing page. Will take a look at the formatting instructions page. -- MJR

Added a map to my guild page and inserted the VoK map. I need to retake the image, as my location arrow is in it :p. Anyway, I think we need to be able to edit which maps are accessible from the click-down beside a map. For example, on my guild page, I'd like to do an even tighter map of our actual compound and regions. This map, however, would not be very useful to someone on the Chariot Stops page. So, either we should add the ability to edit the map-list for each map or, during the map addition, have another box called "List Membership" or something similar. In this, a user could "Edit" the map, and add a unique list name to the field that can be used as a query string for the map box.

For example, let's say I create a map of the northern VoK region. I'd add the NW and SE corner info and the name. In the "List Membership" box, I would add to the end of the comma-delinated, pre-existing list "Goon". So, if there were a Northern VoK guild named Grass Pickers that wanted to use the map too, the field would read "Goon, GrassPickers, OtherList1, OtherList2". Then, on my guild page, I would set '$MAP VoK.jpg $MAPLIST Goon' or something similar. This would add to the drop-down list only the maps that have that list name in the membership box. Obviously, lists names would have to be the same and such, but it seems like a good idea and would give guilds and other wiki-authors more options in their mapping.

If the 'list membership' idea were implemented, the only time someone would see the full list is if they left the maplist blank or when they were actually on the Map page.

Suggestions/Changes?

The current map feature allows you to specify a map to use, even if it is not on the Maps page. For instance, $MAP Users/MJR/MyCamp.jpg would make the default map Users/MJR/MyCamp.jpg.

A program that will allow us to edit the wiki but not by using it? -- Desertking

I'm not sure I understand this request. -- MJR

Umm like a program that you can remotetly edit the wiki with? like a blog thing? --DK

Such a program is not consistent with "the wiki way" I think - what would be the benefit/use? Off-blog blogger apps are often used to make inserting blog entries easier which is the most frequent use, wiki editing is most often 'editing' versus inserting. Note that most off-blog blogger apps don't allow for commenting, only initial entry: wiki's most usual action. I for one would rarely use such a thing: the ratio of entry of totally new pages to upated ones is small to miniscule. -- mathir

Shadus: heh, as a user of SE Magic for Livejournal (It is as good of a existing entry editor as new entry creator, it also tracks entires made by friends, enteries where you responded, etc, alot of the funcionality could be applied to wiki concepts) I can understand what he's talking about, as far as I know though no good application exists for editing wiki resources, but as a community that I tend to find is comprised of alot of computer professionals and people who are technically adept I see absolutely no reason we couldn't create one if we decided to. hmm maybe i'll wander over and see if se magic is open source....

Thanks for that you make explaining alot easyer, --DK

We have no such program, but if someone wants to write one, go ahead. -- MJR

Is there some way to delete a page? Especially in our private guild wikis? If so, please put the instructions in the formatting section. If not, it would be nice to see something like 'Page deletions are not authorized' or something. Thanks -Tesa

If you create a poorly named page by accident, then edit the page again and replace the page's contents with $NOINDEX In some cases a page may be created with an appropriate name but a better named page allready exists. In that case, consolidate the content of the two pages and use #REDIRECT [[Better_Page]] to help people following the same path as yourself. -- Derusha?

If you need a page deleted, replace all the content with the word "DELETE" (fine to have a redirect & noindex still too), and put "DELETE" in the changelog; one of the admins will delete it. Unfortunately, the code currently does a real delete, so we can't open this ability up. -- MJR (plus additional comments embedded by FaceAnkh)

In the Formatting guide there is reference to this Wiki linking to the Tech Tree at atitd.info (http://atitd.info/wiki.php?bname= ). That automatic linking should point to info.atitd.net now. Or is this functionality not going to be re-implemented? --Derusha?

That got broken when the new .info came up, and I never got around to fixing it when .info moved to .net. On my list to fix. -- MJR

A way to link to an interpage link, like the html anchors: <a href="#name"></a> Maby it would break the idea of the wiki. But it would be very handy for the herb identification pages. Then an index of the subtypes could be placed at the start of the pages.

Agreed, I've wanted that in the past as well. I believe there are some preexisting patches I can use; I'll look into it. -- MJR

this already works right now... just use a tag like [#anchorname]. for an example see http://perl.atitd.wiki/tale2/Home#bottom. i thought that was always there. if MJR added it, he didnt tell me. --TheDude

It would be nice to have a way to remove attachments from a page. Is this possible? -- Derusha?

An admin can delete attachments, but the general risks of opening this up are the same as for deleting pages. If you'd like an attachment deleted, put DELETE in it's description so it can be identified easily, then make an edit (non-existent edit or a comment about what should be deleted) to the page holding the attachment with the change comment DELETE ATTACHMENT so an admin notices. -- FaceAnkh

Please would it be posible to have a small "Server Status" section on the home page. As I write this I cant download fmod from the server, this means nothing to me and I have no-idea if the problem is with me or Atitd :-( Nia

I'm sorry for the page of users :( I don't see where i can delete my mistake :(( Tekhamon

Fixed (deleted empty Tekhamon attachment - hope that was it ;) ) -- FaceAnkh

Many of the pages are being translated to French - wonder if we could have a $TRANSLATED FR [[page/subpage]] or some such to make the links consistent? And have it behind a flag or something to show the language? Mathir -yes i am making subpage for french translation. And i am trying the french translation doesnt appear in Index. And i put a flag each time i translate a page -Kaayru

Related to this: some of the shortest pages have both an English and a French version on the same page, marked with flags. For some reason, the flag for English is a Canadian flag, which makes no sense since at least parts of Canada are officially bilingual! Shouldn't this be a British flag (or American flag, or both next to each other)? And can we also set up for German, since that's also an official game language? - Nefer-Bast

Alya wrote has a plugin (passed to TheDude) that gives us a $TRANSLATION command, hopefully that'll get integrated soon :) German translation seems to be underway too :D -- FaceAnkh

It was integrated :D See Translations.

Put the way how to add pages to the link bar in the Formating page. BTW what is it? - Zatarg

If you mean the bar at the top of every page, I believe that's hardcoded into the wiki and can't be altered at the minute :/ A lot of people would like a language-sensitive bar too. -- FaceAnkh

Yes that is what i ment... thanks anyway... - Zatarg

When a wiki page is edited, random line feeds seem to get inserted occasionally. This has repeatedly happened with [Ingredient Order]? and Primary?, though I have not been able to reliably reproduce this behaviour. The line feeds seem to be inserted in the same place every time the page is opened for editing, until something is changed above the line in question. If it helps, I could let someone know the next time this happens. My experience with this has been that once this behaviour starts, it is reproduceable until a change is made above the bad line. Please let me know if I can do anything to help narrow this problem down. - LittleCleo

I have noticed this effect on tables beyond a certain width. - sabt-pestnu

Being able to disband guilds from the private Guild Wikis. - Zatarg

Labels or anchors on links to redirect to a certain section of a page would be useful. e.g. Watermelons redirects to Fruits_and_Vegies and scrolls to the Watermelon's heading wiht [[Fruits and Vegies#Watermelons]] or something... oops already been suggested

this already works right now... just use a tag like [#anchorname]. for an example see http://perl.atitd.wiki/tale2/Home#bottom --TheDude

Be able to color code ticks on the location map! Yeah i had that idea too, also smaller indicators. When mjr gets time to document duplication of the wiki, i'd like to try and add that myself on a copy of my own.
