Chime Tuning Guide

Chime Tuning

Introduction

Chimes are produced from fine glass rods in an Acoustics Lab. There are twenty birds, and five modifiers, which describe all of the possible chimes. A chime initially starts as one of three types of pure chime. By applying treatments to these starting chimes, many different chimes can be obtained. Chimes may be as pure as crystal, or as pure as rain. Only chimes that are as pure as crystal may be removed from the Acoustics Laboratory. In this Guide, we will refer to chimes that are as pure as crystal as pure, and those which are as pure as rain, as imupure. Pure chimes are associated with only one audio tune, whereas impure chimes have a tune which combines the song of two pure chimes.

Pure chimes may be loaded into a windchime after they are removed from the Acoustics Laboratory. Pure chimes are also used in the building of a Lesser Sphinx. Pure chimes may not be loaded back into the Acoustics Laboratory after they are removed.

Operation of the Chime Bench

The building menu initially looks like this:

After selection "Start working a Wind Chime", one Fine Glass Rod is loaded into the lab. When the rod is loaded, it can be assigned to one of three starting chimes: Soaring Pheasant, Floating Osprey, or Floating Parrot. A message of the form "The sound is as pure as crystal. You hear: Soaring Pheasant", appears in the Main chat, and the sound will play. At this point, the menu changes to look like this:

The Tuning menu allows you to treat the rod to change its sound. Each upgrade you add to the lab gives you a different option on the Tuning menu. When you apply a treatment, the sound changes. You can apply the same treatment multiple times, and the sound might continue to change. The Tuning menu looks like this:

After treating the rod, it may go out of tune. When this happens, the message changes to something like this: "The sound is as pure as water after a rain. You think you hear:Diving Nightingale". The sound also changes to a mixture of the main chime and another one. We will refer to this as an impure chime in this Guide. You will not be able to remove the rod from the lab when it is impure. In order to remove a chime it needs to be pure as crystal. When you remove a pure chime you get a Pure Chime of the same name in your inventory.
