Citizenship

Citizenship

Goal: Build a ferry boat and ride it to the mainland.

1.) Click on your avatar or hit Escape to open your menu. Set your Preferences. I reduced my video settings by hitting Escape, then clicking on Utilities and Options:Video.

2.) Look around.

3.) Talk with people. You'll probably see a bunch of names at the edge of your screen and floating over other avatars. The ones with the title Mentor are there to help -- they're experienced players who hang out on the island to help new arrivals. Even if you don't need any help, they're usually fun to chat with. Everyone is a potential friend and ally, and working with others helps you reach your goal faster.

4.) Use the web for information.

5.) Collect 50 wood. Now that you know your way around, it's time to get to work. Wood is one of the resources on the webpage mentioned above. If you run up to a tree and click on it you can gather wood. You will want to visit several trees since each one takes a minute to regenerate.

6.) Collect 10 slate. You will find slate near water. When you come across some, an orange icon will appear at the top right of your screen. Click on the icon to collect the slate. (You will probably run past the spot where the slate is and have to go back to it. Remember that while running, you can stop instantly by right-clicking.)

7.) Find the two schools. Press F3 to pop up a local map, and look for the "SArch" and "SArt" labels. These represent a School of Architecture and a School of Art, respectively. At the schools, note what is available to learn and what is required in tuition.

Lisimba has created an annotated map of the island that may also help.

8.) At the School of Architecture

9.) At the School of Art & Music

10.) Find public buildings and/or build them yourself. Remember, information on buildings can be found at http://wiki.atitd.net/tale2/Buildings You need a wood plane, a flax comb and a small distaff.

11.) Build your ferry.

12.) Use your ferry to journey to the mainland. Congratulations!

Beyond Citizenship

Now that you're a citizen in Egypt, new paths have opened up for you. There are new skills available at the schools and you can start your initiation in each of the 7 disciplines.

One way to start exploring would be to visit each one of each discipline's school/university and sign up for the initiation tasks. Press F3 to bring up the map of your area and plot a route that will bring you to a school or university. In particular you'll want to visit the University of Worship where they will also give you some seeds. You can only get seeds from a particular University once, but you can get visit other Universities of Worship to get more (hopefully different) seeds. The Universities may also offer other skills you can learn for free.

You may also wish to join one or more guilds if you haven't already (especially mentoring guilds). Guilds are both a way to share items and to share information. Joining a guild does not put you under any obligation to the guild and you can always quit the guild later. There is no limit on the number of guilds you can join. You may wish to read the guild messages (by clicking on the guild building) to learn more about the guild before applying. In some cases you will get accepted into a guild faster if you send a /chat or /tell to an elder of the guild so they know they should visit the guild building to accept you in to the guild.

Both the School of Architecture (SArch) and School of Art (SArt) have more skills you'll want to get. SArch has Compound Construction and Pottery. SArt has flax related skills. Note that you won't have the tuition for Pottery, but try getting it anyway - you'll get the water jug you'll need for gathering the tuition.

The Citizenship Challenge (for reference)

By popular demand I am posting the contents of the new Citizenship Challenge.

When you join the island for the first time you are now given a tab in the lower left hand corner of your screen called, simply, "Citizenship". This works much :like any of the other challenges released as part of the new mission system.

They are presented in a logical order in an effort to aid newcomers on their journey to Egypt.

The tasks are:

Gather Slate near a shoreline
Learn Stone Blade Fabrication
Make a Stone Blade (Special Menu)
Gather Wood from a Tree
Learn Carpentry (School of Architecture)
Build a Wood Plane (Projects Menu)
Make Boards using a Wood Plane
Learn Brick Rack Construction (School of Architecture)
Build a Brick Rack (Projects Menu)
Gather Sand
Gather Mud near a Shoreline
Gather Grass
Dry Grass into Straw (Drop Menu)
Make Bricks using a Brick Rack
Get Flax Seeds from a School of Art and Music
Let the Flax Bed go wild, and harvest Seeds
Weed a flax bed several times and harvest the Flax
Learn Flax Processing
Rot Flax in the water
Take rotten flax from the water
Gather Thorns (click on plants to find a species that has thorns)
Build a Flax Comb
Process flax on the flax comb until you get Tow
Learn the Clothwork skill (School of Art and Music)
Build a Small Distaff
Spin Tow into Twine
Gather Tar from a Tar Pit
Learn Ferry Construction (School of Art and Music)
Clean up by picking up your Brick Rack
Clean up by tearing down your Wood Plane
Build a Ferry Boat and use it to travel to Egypt!

I hope this helps all you mentors out there. Remember that your students can see which of these items they have completed, and which ones they have not.
(Incomplete items say "No" next to them while complete items say "Done")

Thanks to all of you that have given me feedback on the various texts for the island signs. I believe we are very close to having one of the best new
player experiences that ATITD has ever seen.

Cheers!
-Gentry
