This is one of the more coveted resources, because of the use in glass. So here's a guide how to make a bunch without working more than necessary. The linked pages has the details, this recipe just tries to collect enough information here to give you an idea of the best way to do this. The recipe scales, of course, but be sure you can carry the ash home :)
About 400 ash if all goes well:
- Go to the 31 cabbage spot in lower Nubia, see fruit and vegetables for exact location. Bring jugs, and 4-8 cabbage seeds, and preferable a hatchet.
- Grow 3000 cabbages (100 beds... if you do 5 at the time, it's 20 growing cycles or so).
- Harvest 449 wood.
- Make 6 bonfires of 2 wood. You should now have 437 wood left.
- Make a chat timer: Start a chat with a willing or defunct player. Turn on the chat times with /ts if you haven't already. Go to a tree. Harvest once, then write 10,20,30,40,50 and 60 for every 10s the tree timer counts down.
- Pin the bonfire menus. Open all the "add wood" menu, but do not press OK yet. Light the bonfires as quickly as you can. When the last bonfire reaches 0 wood (keep clicking it to get it to update), press the stacked "OK" buttons quickly.
- Keep adding 1 wood every 10s using the chat timer and the above method. Do this 22 times... at this point, you should have 317 wood left.
- Now add 32 wood to each fire, and keep clicking them all. The remaining wood must go to something between 2 to 10 before you want to continue. Close all bonfires that do not do this. If all come within this range, just close one... it was an extra. You should now have 125 wood left.
- You now have 10s to add 600cabbage to 5 fires. If you have fewer fires left, ignore the extra cabbages.
- Add 1 wood to each bonfire in the manner described above every 20 seconds (open all "add wood.." dialogs, wait for the tick, press OK 5 times). Do this 25 times .... if you're running 5 fires you will be out of wood at this point, otherwise you will have 25 wood left for each extra fire dropped.
- Pick up the ash. Oh, and the 12 very hard earned charcoal.
