Dates are a type of fruit used as a Cooking ingredient. Never cultivated, they are gathered wild from date palm trees found all over Egypt (a partial list can be found in the map below).
Any dates growing on a palm tree are free for anyone to take. However, once a tree's dates have been gathered, it will not grow any further dates until it has been fertilized with Saltpeter. Once the tree has been fertilized, it will start to produce dates again, though it will take about an hour before any are ready to gather.
(I timed it, and the growth of the first date took exactly 1 hour and 33 minutes, teppy time. Ancano)
The growth time is not identical between fertilizations. --ShanVizen
It is considered good etiquette to fertilize a tree whenever you gather dates from it, so that there will be some available for the next passer-by.
