Guides > Mutagenics > Sea Lily Mutagen Primer

Mutagens are very precise breeding tools. To use a mutagen, a bulb/seed needs to be loaded in both the left and right splint. These can be the same bulb, which is very useful. The mutagen then acted to swap one gene from the left splint with one gene from the right splint, producing two new bulbs/seeds. The genes chosen for swapping are solely functions of the length of the genome on the left and right splints. This has two very useful results. First, Fracture and Silken stock bulbs will exhibit exactly the same gene swaps since they are the same length genomes. Second, two applications of the same mutagen on the same pair of bulbs/seeds (reloaded into the same splints) returns the genomes to their original sequences.

Enough theory, onto the application.

Format below is: Left Splint/Right Splint + Mutagen (Left gene #/right gene #) = Left Splint/Right Splint

To keep this shorter, I'm only going to show the full genomes at interesting points, filling in the rest of them are left as an exercise to the reader.

Helpful Hints

  1. Copy down your plan for the mutagen series, along with what the actual numbers would be for you. (Silken 4x giant was my first series so the numbers were my actual bulb numbers.) This way you will know exactly which bulb goes where at each step.
  2. Load into your inventory only the mutagens and bulbs for your planned mutagen series.
  3. The greenhouse takes 1 teppy minute for each mutation, so it goes pretty quickly. Lots of pinned menus make it a snap.
  4. Data redundancy and crosschecks are your friends. Use them as much as possible to keep yourself sane during this process. (1) and (2) help a lot for this.
  5. If you do screwup, remember that you can reverse out any changes you have made by reloading and reapplying the mutagens in the reverse order of the steps you have already done.
  6. Enjoy yourself and your new bulbs.

Silken 4x Giant

Silken = RRR OOO YYY GGG UUU III at the start, 18 long gene sequence.

The positions for the swaps can be found at Solvent Findings. Shorthand notations are: K = Karnak, LE = Lower Egypt, UE = Upper Egypt, 7L = Seven Lakes. Short mutagen name to specific names are easiest using Recipe Crib Sheet.

 Silken/Silken + K#10(10/18) = 1/2
1/2 + K#6(7/17) = 3/4
4/3 + K#15(4/13) = 5/6
5/6 + K#4(16/13) = 7/8
8/7 + UE#3(11/2) = 9/10
9/10 + UE#1(11/15) = 11/12 = 1x giant #11 is now RRR OOO IYY IUG IUU III #12 is now RGR UOO YYY GGG UUR OYG which has a ROYG in genes 15-18
12/11 + K#6(7/17) = 13/14
14/13 + K#9(17/11) = 15/16
16/15 + K#11(10/4) = 17/18
17/18 + 7L#1(2/3) = 19/20
19/20 + K#3(2/5) = 21/22
21/22 + K#13(9/5) = 23/24, 23 = 2x giant #23 is now ROR UOO IYR OYG UUR OYG which has ROYG in 9-12, 15-18 #24 is now RRG GYO IYY IUG IUU IGI
Silken/24 + K#10(10/18) = 25/26
23/26 + K#8(8/18) = 27/28
28/25 + UE#2(13/7) = 29/30
29/27 + UE#2(13/7) = 31/32
31/32 + K#3(2/5) = 33/34 = 3x giant #31 is now ROG GYO IYY IUG IUU IGY #32 is now ROR URO YGR OYG UUR OYG which has ROYG in 5-8, 9-12, 15-18
33/30 + K#15(4/13) = 35/36
34/36 + KE15(4/13) = 37/38
38/35 + K#3(2/5) = 39/40
39/37 + 7L#1(2/3) = 41/42 = 4x giant #41 is now RRR OOO IYY IGG UUU III #42 is now ROY GRO YGR OYG UUR OYG = 4x giant, ROYG in 1-4, 5-8, 9-12, 15-18

Resulting bulbs are #42 (the goal), #40 and #41 ('junk' bulbs). I also stopped at the 2x giant and bulbed it before continuing on.

 #23 = 2x giant, yellow1 outer stamen
#40 = junk, yellow1 outer and middle stamen
#41 = junk, yellow1 outer and middle stamen
 #42 = 4x giant, white

Note : a giant x 4 can be produced from fractures in 6 steps ill write up guide when i have time ~Zaniac )

I never meant to imply that this is the optimal sequence, just an example of how to go about this in a sane manner. If you follow along you can see how the genes rotate back and forth between the 3 bulbs needed to do this. My second mutation sequence was the +8 bulb and I know the 43 steps I used to do that are non-optimal. -sumtet
