Limestone

Limestone is a whitish sedimentary rock that is crucial to Egyptian technology. Its main value is as a source of lime. Although our ancestors had to build mines to extract limestone from underground, we are lucky enough to have deposits of limestone on the surface, which anyone can access with a simple hammer and chisel.

Uses

Finding Limestone Deposits

Limestone deposits appear as patches of white rock on the ground. A "limestone" action icon will appear in the upper right of your screen when you are standing on a deposit.

See the Atlas: Limestone Patches page for a map of known limestone deposits in Egypt.

Gathering Limestone

While carrying both a hammer and a chisel, click on the "limestone" icon to chip out some limestone. This starts a 30-second Endurance timer. You will gather 1 limestone at a time if you are using a flint hammer, 3 at a time if using a heavy mallet.

Occasionally, gathering limestone will also yield 1 deben of soda.

Limestone Gathering Tools

Tools (particularly the flint chisel) eventually wear out. Bring replacement tools if you are planning to gather a lot of limestone. Metal tools take longer to wear out, but still do.

Here are the known tools:

Flint Hammer
basic limestone gathering tool. Some reports say that it does not break. Others say that it breaks occasionally while using a lead chisel. I've had three flint hammers in a row break after exactly 15 limestone each, using a lead chisel - Belisar
Flint Chisel
basic limestone gathering tool. Breaks frequently (no data on average frequency). (Appears to be highly variable - I had one chisel last 95 pulls (40 one day and 55 a week later), the next one broke after 24 hits, the one after that 3 hits, and finally 11 hits on the fourth. -- Tass)
Heavy Mallet
metal tool for gathering limestone. Increases yield to 3 limestone per attempt, does not affect rate of soda gathering. Not known to break.
Lead Chisel
metal tool for gathering limestone. Does not seem to break as often as flint versions. Reports indicate it may last 40-60 pulls on average.
(My lead chisel has been used over 200 times (100+ with flint hammer, 100 with heavy lead mallet) and still going Gemstar )

Mixing tool types is not successful. Using a Flint Hammer on a Lead Chisel will break the hammer, and a Heavy Mallet on a Flint Chisel will break the chisel (and only pull a single limestone).
(the flint hammer breaking with lead chisel was at about the same frequency for me as the flint chisel breaking when using flint hammer Gemstar )
