Alignments
When you learn the Alchemy tech, an option will open up on the UThought (that has completed Alchemy research) to attune yourself to an Alchemical Alignment. There is no cost, and you can change alignment at any time.
To complete an alignment, you must find a group the right size that aligns together properly.
Alignment | Group Size |
Meld 7 large rubies -> 1 huge ruby | 2 |
Meld 7 large topaz -> 1 huge topaz | 2 |
Meld 7 large emeralds -> 1 huge emerald | 3 |
Meld 7 large sapphires -> 1 huge sapphire | 3 |
Meld 7 large diamonds -> 1 huge diamond | 5 |
Transmute 49 ash -> 49 potash | 3 |
Transmute 49 limestone -> 49 lime | 4 |
Transmute 98 tin ore -> 1 arsenic | 5 |
Transmute 40 lead -> 1 arsenic | 5 |
Alignment Process
- Have everyone align to the same item.
- Pair off (about acro distance apart from other pairs).
- Test your alignment from the Special menu. You will see one of three results:
- Need to be more solitary: Too close to other people
- Vision is confused: Someone in the group does not align for that particular item (be careful that someone wasn't accidentally included in your group by being too close)
- Vision is fleeting: The group is aligned but is not yet the right size
- Once you have a good pair (you get a fleeting message), add others one at a time to get to larger group sizes.
- When you have the right number and set of people, you'll be told that you receive a Vision and are now aligned for that item. This alignment is permanent, so you can safely change to another type for further testing.
Alignment matches seem to be based on a hash table (as for acro). Groups that match up well for one alignment often match up well for another (though it's not guaranteed).
Alchemy Process Overview
- Basic Tinctures are created from distilled spirits (made in an Alembic) and three ingredients in an Assimilation Bath. Recipes for basic tinctures are fixed, so you can create them ahead of time and keep them until you need them.
- Alchemical Compounds are created by combining basic tinctures in an Alchemist's Bench. The sequence of three basic tinctures required will be different for each attempted transmutation. Most of the time, getting a specific sequence will require the use of additional, intermediate basic tinctures as well as reducing agent, since there are specific rules about how the various basic tinctures can combine.
- The actual Alchemical Transmutation is completed in the Chemistry Laboratory, by applying the required alchemical compound to the set of items to be transmuted.
Chemistry Lab - Determining Requirements
- Load the items to be transmuted into a Chemistry Laboratory.
- You must have previously aligned to the desired transmutation in order to see it as an option on the lab.
- Read the length 3 Alchemical Compound required to complete the transmutation.
- You can flush the chamber if the requirement is too hard, but you'll lose everything.
- Compound will be in the format of: SymbolSymbolSymbol, where each Symbol represents a specific basic tincture (e.g. GsGuPz).
- The order of the symbols is important - IbPzPn will not work on a chem lab requesting IbPnPz, for example.
Assimilation Bath - Mixing Basic Tinctures
Basic Tinctures are created in an
Assimilation Bath. They can be safely removed from the bath and stored in chests until needed.
Basic tinctures have a 2 letter symbol with 2 numbers (between -20 and 20) associated with it (e.g. 9 Af 17).
Each batch of 50 tincture takes 5 minutes and requires:
- 7 grain spirits of (water or better) - distilled from beer or wine in an Alembic
- 'Moon' ingredient - typically some type of mineral (saltpeter, salt, silt, cc, bauxite, petroleum, etc.)
- 'Stars' ingredient - typically a metal ore or red sand
- 'Sun' ingredient - typically a food item (fish, veggies, mushies, etc.)
- Also requires Alchemical Maceration tech.
There's nothing tricky here - just put your spirits and the right set/amount of ingredients for a given recipe in the bath and mix away.

Alchemist's Bench - Creating Compounds
Mixing Compounds
Alchemical compounds are created by combining basic tinctures in an
Alchemist's Bench.
Two tinctures will combine if one number from each adds up to -1, 0 or 1. This creates a bond at that point, using up those numbers and leaving the remaining numbers on the resulting chain. For example:
- [-7 Hd 4] + [-4 Gs 18] => [-7 HdGs 18]
Most of the time, getting the specific length 3 compound your chem lab wants will require using additional tinctures as intermediaries, and then removing them from the chain using reducing agent (see below).
Notes on bench usage
- Petroleum is added using the fuel option.
- The bench appears to use 1 db of fuel per teppy minute (or tick?), continuously until empty (cannot 'take' petroleum out ?). Need to confirm the usage rate.
- The bench will tell you if the fuel runs out. This will not affect any chains/tinctures on the bench, but no reactions can occur without fuel.
- Basic tinctures are added using the mix option.
- You cannot add anything but basic tinctures to the bench. In other words, you cannot create a chain, remove it, and then add it back later to continue working with it.
- The bench can contain more than one chain at a time and more than one of a given basic tincture at a time. However, you cannot control the order in which things will combine if more than one combination is possible. Thus it is safest to only inject one thing at a time and wait for the desired reaction before proceeding.
- Tinctures and chains will combine automatically (if the numbers align), or you can stir the mixture manually.
- Compounds of length 2 or longer can be removed by filtering the precipitate.
- You can also flush the chamber, but will lose everything.
Using Reducing Agent
Reducing Agent is also made in the bench and can be applied to the compound to aid in reaching the correct formula
- 400 reducing agent requires 400 water in jugs, 1 lime, 1 cobra blood
- Cannot be made if there is already a compound on the bench
Injecting reducing agent from the bottom will remove one tincture from one (random) chain on the bench. For each length of chain, there are two possible tincture locations that can be removed. Which of the two is selected is also random.
Compound Length | Potentially Removed |
1 | 1 |
2 | 12 |
3 | 123 |
4 | 1234 |
5 | 12345 |
6 | 123456 |
7 | 1234567 |
8 | 12345678 |
Sprinkling reducing agent on the top will reduce the quantity of every tincture on the bench by 1. (So don't sprinkle it!)
