Wiki Guides - Distillation | Alchemy | Basic Tincture

Alignments

When you learn the Alchemy tech, an option will open up on the UThought (that has completed Alchemy research) to attune yourself to an Alchemical Alignment. There is no cost, and you can change alignment at any time.

To complete an alignment, you must find a group the right size that aligns together properly.

Alignment Group Size
Meld 7 large rubies -> 1 huge ruby 2
Meld 7 large topaz -> 1 huge topaz 2
Meld 7 large emeralds -> 1 huge emerald 3
Meld 7 large sapphires -> 1 huge sapphire 3
Meld 7 large diamonds -> 1 huge diamond 5
Transmute 49 ash -> 49 potash 3
Transmute 49 limestone -> 49 lime 4
Transmute 98 tin ore -> 1 arsenic 5
Transmute 40 lead -> 1 arsenic 5

Alignment Process

Alignment matches seem to be based on a hash table (as for acro). Groups that match up well for one alignment often match up well for another (though it's not guaranteed).

Alchemy Process Overview

  1. Basic Tinctures are created from distilled spirits (made in an Alembic) and three ingredients in an Assimilation Bath. Recipes for basic tinctures are fixed, so you can create them ahead of time and keep them until you need them.
  2. Alchemical Compounds are created by combining basic tinctures in an Alchemist's Bench. The sequence of three basic tinctures required will be different for each attempted transmutation. Most of the time, getting a specific sequence will require the use of additional, intermediate basic tinctures as well as reducing agent, since there are specific rules about how the various basic tinctures can combine.
  3. The actual Alchemical Transmutation is completed in the Chemistry Laboratory, by applying the required alchemical compound to the set of items to be transmuted.

Assimilation Bath - Mixing Basic Tinctures

Basic Tinctures are created in an Assimilation Bath. They can be safely removed from the bath and stored in chests until needed.

Basic tinctures have a 2 letter symbol with 2 numbers (between -20 and 20) associated with it (e.g. 9 Af 17).

Each batch of 50 tincture takes 5 minutes and requires:

There's nothing tricky here - just put your spirits and the right set/amount of ingredients for a given recipe in the bath and mix away.

Alchemist's Bench - Creating Compounds

Mixing Compounds

Alchemical compounds are created by combining basic tinctures in an Alchemist's Bench.

Two tinctures will combine if one number from each adds up to -1, 0 or 1. This creates a bond at that point, using up those numbers and leaving the remaining numbers on the resulting chain. For example:

Most of the time, getting the specific length 3 compound your chem lab wants will require using additional tinctures as intermediaries, and then removing them from the chain using reducing agent (see below).

Notes on bench usage

Using Reducing Agent

Reducing Agent is also made in the bench and can be applied to the compound to aid in reaching the correct formula

Injecting reducing agent from the bottom will remove one tincture from one (random) chain on the bench. For each length of chain, there are two possible tincture locations that can be removed. Which of the two is selected is also random.

Compound Length Potentially Removed
1 1
2 12
3 123
4 1234
5 12345
6 123456
7 1234567
8 12345678

Sprinkling reducing agent on the top will reduce the quantity of every tincture on the bench by 1. (So don't sprinkle it!)
