The contradictary results indicate that there is some extra factor that we're missing, possibly crystal depth, probably crystal length. Or vid card differences. (Or there's more than one type of crystal that looks exactly the same, which could be a bug.)

We can get Limestone from Limestone Crystals( GM- in my case ) without firing them. All you need to do is break them up with a pick and collect the Limestone from the ground. The drop message from the stones is wrong. Reports that you found nothing, confirmed with GM. - Mindl

Shadus: Our public level 3 iron/strontium/tin mine has had over 1600 (+800 or so pulls, +250 metal earlier this week, plus whatever public took out of it) actual smelted metal taken out of it in 2 days, any idea at about how many pulls before it falls to level 4? My current estimate on pulls since it went level 3 is somewhere in the neighborhood of 5000-5500...
Dirt apparently smelts at a different rate from metal with yields from dirt being significantly lower than would be predicted with this method. This gives support to the theory that different crystals smelt at different rates.
Apparently blank stones have absolutely no effect on the final smelt. Testing this hypothesis I smelted 5 PB- and 6 blank and got 1 aluminum (the expected result for 5 PB-). If the blank stones had some effect going by the current theory of highest crystal number determining smelt yield there should have been some other result, possibly no metal.
-Belgand
Finndi : This is wrong, at least to some extent. As a conterproof, you can try smelting a batch containing up to twice as much SS- than TC- and you'll get iron, and not copper as expected. As far as I can tell, yield is not only crystal count related but also crystal type.
Belgand : Perhaps this is related to the varying yields that have been recorded. Thus, the metal with the greatest yield will win out, not merely the greatest crystal count. In many cases though, the greatest crystal count will likely give the greater metal yield, thus obscuring our understanding.
Finndi : yes, that was my point ;
Can you mix stones of the SAME type of ore to get the same yield? For example, mixing NB+ and RM- to get tin. I have noted this on one yield with 1 rock of NB+ and 9 rocks of RM- yielding 5 tin. -Melchizedek
Bronze: Cart of 10stones TM-(?) and TB-(?) (from copper/tin mine) yielded 12 bronze, confirmed with morkalum :)
KS+: Theorized yield: 1 silver per 8 crystals
Crystals | Yield | Smelter | Investigator |
22 KS+, 13 SS- | 2 Silver | Pot | Belgand |
21 KS+, 6 SS-, 3 TB- | 2 Silver | Pot | Belgand |
10 KS+, 2 SS-, 1 PB | 1 Silver | Pot | Belgand |
8 KS+, 2KM- | 1 Silver | Pot | Belgand |
7 KS+, 9TC+, 1PB- | 1 Silver | Pot | CrimsonShadow |
4 KS+ | Nothing | Pot | Belgand |
CrimsonShadow : Just thought I'd add my results showing 7 KS+ and giving 1 silver so 8 KS+ is NOT required. I'm currently trying to figure out how 'pure' the KS+ has to be to produce silver. I've tried batches with 5KS+ and 10TC+ and get dirt.
According to these data 8 will produce at least 1. While 7 is a possible minimum if it or anything lower (although above 4 which is shown to produce nothing) were the conversion rate then 21 crystals would have yielded 3 silver, not 2. Thus I feel that this number is loosely confirmed at present. I'd feel happier stating this as definitive if there was evidence of 24 crystals giving 3 silver (or 16 giving 2, but not 15) but at present this seems to be reasonably well-supported. Independent confirmation would be very nice (though I am curious as to what this might mean for those reporting Iron rather than Silver from these crystals).
Finndi : As shown here Finndi Metal Experiments, it does not seem true that Yield = constant * Crystal_count or 15 TC- should have given 3 iron only, and not 4. The yields need to be tested more, and testers should not forget that yields are probably affected by both Crystal type, Crystal count, possibly Crystal diversity (some have been speaking about catalysis like effects) and Smelter type
Finndi : as i've been pointed ingame, this conclusion is too fast, a 0.33 iron concentration of the TC- crystal currently fits with the results (it's the only actual solution if yields = constant *crystal count)
Shadus: Personally, I subscribe to the school of thought that most of it is due to crystal misindentification. The more we get into mining and experiment the more convinced I become that each crystal has a value (or set of values) that once added to the smelter add togeather to yield the end result. Whatever value is highest in the smelt (which wouldn't necessarily be the one with the highest crystal count) is what gets yielded. I'm still trying to figure out a way to calculate out the values without knowing any of them at a baseline for sure.
Belgand: I agree that we need far more data to reliably prove any of this. That is why I continually refer to the results as theories and the data as experimental. I strongly suspect that user error may be a large part of this, especially when it can be hard to properly count all of the crystals in a smelt. As more results come in (and we need them, please post your own results here so we can work on confirmation) I suspect that we'll be able to develop a better picture of how this system works.
Fexxer: I've added some minor crystal TC- yields on [Fexxer goes Mining]?.
Delerium: What I would like to know is, does it base it's totals on total mineral count, or just total crystal count. If you have 3 different types of copper crystals in a smelter, would it take the highest yield crystal total, and ignore the rest, or would it add in a percentage (depending on crystal) for each crystal type that is considered "copper" Right now I can't decide over only throwing in 1 crystal type each smelt for copper, or just throwing all the crystals in that are "copper".
Mentemhe: I routinely use 2-3 copper crystal types (SS-, BG-, and MP1 when I get it), for outputs of 40-50 copper with the Craft Furnace.
