Manners matter. You NEED people in this game, one of its keynotes is cooperation. It is NOT a single player game, though you can "solo". Even if you do solo, you will still need to trade, etc so it pays to be polite. Don't just run around asking for things. Offer something in return even if it's only cutting wood.
However, some folks who have been playing a longer time than you and think they are experts, will try to patronise you. You don't HAVE to let them. This is a game, don't let them get to you.
Find a good guild. Better still, find several. You can always leave. They will help you, they will have tools you could not possibly afford to make for yourself yet that you may be able to use.
In some districts there are public tools, things that are set up so anyone can use them even without being in a guild there. These are incredibly useful specially if you solo or travel a lot.
Some people want to be "mentors", who help you. Do not be talked into making a mentor shrine for the first person you meet - they are valuable to the person who receives them.
Cicada cages - if you have a cicada cage full of cicadas and you take it out to place it, make sure you ALSO carry 1 linen and 4 boards, otherwise the game will not let you place it.
