UPDATE: At some point, a permanent cure to the disease was found. This was not updated on the Wiki at the time. If you have a coughing fit, please seek help on any public channel, especially E!

The wiki was updated, just not connected to other topics. Please see Treatment Lung Spore (Cure) for how to make a permanent cure. Since the cost is really high (140,000 dried wheat for 1000 doses) it is a good idea to ask around for some. -sumtet

UPDATE: As of 3/08/07, the virulency of the disease seems greatly reduced. It no longer causes unconsciousness. The worst observed symptom in patients that have been sick longer than two weeks is a five minute timer on a random stat, which may or may not occur once per hour.

Overview

Zanialmydiya Lung Spore is a Egypt-wide disease, initially contracted by opening strange crates from the Mediterranean. The symptoms are a series of coughing fits that occur at random intervals averaging one coughing session roughly every 90 minutes (further data may be needed, this is a very rough approximation), but varies widely, from as short as 5 minutes between fits to as long as 4 hours between coughing fits.

The disease can be cured using the Mix and Drink option at a Verdant Squill herb, using 1 Cabbage Juice, 10 Powdered Jade, and 1 Recipe: Lung Spore Treatment. The recipe is not consumed.

Containing the spread of disease can be done on a simple level by avoiding all contact, but severely hampers social interaction. Current technological precautions include papyrus litmus strips. Advanced Chemistry 2 allows you to upgrade a Chemistry Lab to create the papyrus litmus strips to test whether an individual is ill. However, only advanced Chemistry 1 is required to create the strips.

Likely related items/technologies are Sand Blooms, of which there are several different types, and the Spanner Wrench, as both were found in the crates that initially released the disease, as per the Pandora's Box mythological tale. Sand Bloom bulbs are initially as Odd Weeds and require Botanical Identification Level 2 to properly inspect.

The mechanism of spreading the disease is as yet unknown and reports are conflicting. A proposed mechanism with merit is simple proximity to the diseased over a length of time. Litmus strip users have said that simply passing by and/or touching the diseased or them touching you is not enough to transmit the disease.

Adv. Chemistry 2 report

The University of Thought, in conjunction with information give to them by the Scientists of Body, have opened up a new level of Advanced Chemistry, to assist them in researching new methodologies in disease control. This tech is available at UThought Karnak.

Once you have learned Advanced Chemistry 2, new options are available at your Chemistry Lab. One is the ability to make "Papyrus strips" under the "Manufacture..." option. Another is the option to Upgrade the Lab. Yet another is the option to "Attempt to Precisely Calibrate the Lab". The initial upgrade requires:

1 Brass Plate
20 Glass Jars
1 Thermometer
4 Bolt
8 Washer
20 Steel Wire
4 Magnesium Wire

Once this upgrade is complete, you can then install glassware in the Chem Lab. It asks for one each:

1 Thistle Tube
1 Beaker
1 Test Tubes
1 Florence Flask
1 Distillation Coils

It will accept Quality 1 glassware, but I would recommend that at least some of the glassware be of higher quality (see below). Once installed the glassware can be removed, if necessary.

When you have installed the complete set of glassware, and if you have a "Recipe: Lung Spore Treatment" in your inventory, you get the option to Mix a batch of "Lung Spore Test Solution". With Quality 1 glassware installed, the requirements for this are:

355 cabbage juice
6 powdered jade
70 saltpeter
70 acid.

With higher quality glassware, those requirements are reduced substantially.

When you mix the solution, your chem lab will contain 50 doses of "Lung Spore Test Solution". Once you have the Test Solution in the Lab, you will need to make "papyrus strips" using papyrus paper from the Lab's "Manufacture..." option. 1 papy paper makes 8 strips. With papyrus strips in your inventory, you can click on the Chem Lab's "Prepare..." menu and dip a papyrus strip into the solution. Doing so yields one "Litmus Test: Lung Spore Disease" and drops the number of doses in the lab by 1.

Once you have one of these Litmus Test strips in your inventory, you can click on other players and see a new item in the menu: Test this person for Lung Spore Disease. You will see the results in your Main Chat. Depending on the outcome of the test, the used test strip will then be in your inventory labelled either as "Litmus Test: Lung Spore (POSITIVE)" or "Litmus Test: Lung Spore (NEGATIVE)". You also have the option to test yourself. Click yourself and go to "Skills/Lab Work...".

The third option, "Attempt to Precisely Calibrate the Lab", is available after the upgrades are completed by clicking the new "Special..." item in the Lab menu. So far, all our attempts to do so have been unsuccessful, indicated by a pop-up window that states "You are unable to calibrate the lab". When you attempt the calibration, you receive a warning/confirmation popup that tells you that calibrating the lab will destroy the previous calibration.

It also appears that Advance Chemistry 2 is necessary only to perform the upgrades to the Chemistry Lab. It has been confirmed that players with only Advanced Chemistry 1 have the option to make Papyrus Strips, mix a Lung Spore Test Solution, and can attempt to calibrate the lab.

The Recipe for the cure is available at SBody

This recipe will only be handed out by the School of Body to healthy Egyptians. So help and care are required to safely cure yourself without infecting anyone else in the process.

To cure yourself you require the following:

Verdant Squill growing on the ground - you will get a third option on the herbs menu to Mix and Drink
 10 Powdered Jade
 1 Cabbage Juice
1 Recipe: Lung Spore Treatment (inventory item)

Note: If you have a poor video card, the Verdant Squill will take on a darker shade, and the underside will instead be green:

Simply click on the herb and choose the option to make and drink the mixture. The Recipe item itself is not consumed and can be reused.

So, to summarize, the process for being cured is:

1) Healthy person gets copy of recipe from the School of Body.

2) Healthy person transfers copy of recipe to infected person (preferably via chest, to minimize the risk of infecting the healthy person).

3) Ill person locates a wild, growing Verdant Squill.

4) With 10 powdered jade, 1 cabbage juice, and the recipe in hand, the ill person clicks on Verdant Squill and selects the option to "Mix this with powdered jade and cabbage juice and drink it". The recipe is not consumed.

5) Formerly-ill person goes to School of Art, gets a recipe, and transfers it to another sick person (preferably via chest).

Lung spore disease is a disease which is contracted by opening strange crates found on the Mediterranean.

It's known symptoms are a coughing fit which causes the in-game effect of being pinned to the ground and an END timer of around(ish) 300 seconds.
Seems to happen around once every hour with a random stat timer.

I have had 2 cough attacks 1st with Str timer 2nd with Dex timer

Further updates will be here and on RTrade when no E! moderator is online.

Zovacor's Odd Weed

When he inspected the weed, he got a message:

"Hmm, there might have been something there, but you just make a mess of it. You need Botanical Identification, preferably level-2, to avoid destroying the delicate weed."

A successful inspection (by a healthy person, with Bot-ID2 yielded a Sand Bloom Bulb: Sunshine. When planted, it bloomed into this:

As of 7 Feb when I examined two of these weeds with my Botanical Identification 2, I got the message this is just an ordinary weed and they disappeared. - Peabody

I checked an odd weed with Bot ID 1 and got a lemondrop sandbloom. ~Matk

Progess of the Disease

NOTE: This information is largely historical. As of 2/28/07, it seems that the worst effects of the disease have been removed. Now, the worst symptom observed is a random chance to get a 5 minutes stat timer once per hour.

The disease seems to cause coughing fits, which aside from invoked a stat timer causes your avatar to "pass out" with the following message:

This is also simulated by that avatar being logged out of the game (brought back to the login screen)
