Each item that can be essentially distilled (or macerated) requires a specific temperature to produce essence. This is achieved by the mix of spirits added to the alcohol lamp. The quantity of essence produced is determined both the nearness to the correct temperature and the lowest quality of the spirits used. Using only fire spirits will return 6 essence, and it varies by 1 for each quality level, from 9 using Ra spirits to 3 using any grey spirits. Certain materials require grey spirits for maceration and thus the yield of essence has a permanent maximum of 3.

It is known:
1) Spirts come in different types ranging from Wood to Fish (Grey is sort of special type but for the purposes of this should considered before Wood)
2) Spirits come in different purities ranging from Earth to Ra (Again, grey is sort of special)
3) To create an Essence you need the correct spirit or combination of spirits
It is assumed:
1) The different types of spirits represent different tempuratures at which the spirit will burn, with Wood burning the coolest and Fish burning the hottest
1a) These points represent the ideal tempurature at which that spirit burns.
1b) These tempurature scale is not linear, Worm does not burn twice as hot as Wood. How this scale works exactly is not known yet.
2) The different purities represent how far a given spirit is from the ideal, Ra being the closest and Earth being the farthest.
3) That to create Essence from a given material there is both an ideal tempurature, and a range of tempuratures that will still work. This is reflected by you get more spirits as you use higher quality spirits.
4) Not all Essence will be able to be created using base spirits, because their ideal point and range is not with the ranges of the base spirits.
Therefore:
1) If we blend spirits we will be able to reach tempurature points that we cannot reach with the base spirits. For example, while theoretically "Fruit" spirits can be produced, they don't seem to be distallable in reality. By using spirits on either side that we can create (Grass and Vegetable in this case) we can achieve tempuratures in the correct range to produce Essence from materials that would take Fruit.
2) It might be possible to produce the effect of higher quality spirits using lower quality spirits that are properly blended. For example, "Ra" is the highest purity we know of, but is very difficult to make. However, "Fire" is fairly simple to make. If the ideal spirit for a given material was "Grain Spirits of Ra" it might be possible to create a blend of spirits using Worm of Fire and Grass of Fire to reach the same ideal tempurature.
Comments:
There does seem to be some imperical evidence to support this theory. If you notice on the table of experiments we were unable to produce Essence of Salts of Copper with either Grass or Vegetable Spirits. The results seemingly bracketing the right range. However, when I blended Grain and Mineral Spirits, both of which are two "steps" away from the "Fruit" range I was able to produce some Essence. Also, one of the experiments with powdered ruby followed the same pattern.
