Slate
Slate is found by shorelines. Run around in any area where you can collect mud, and sometimes an additional action icon will appear that allows you to gather slate.

Slate Collection
There is a pattern to slate collection. Normally, slate occupies 1/4 of a coordinate square. Picking up slate has a chance of producing slate in the same spot or in the surrounding 8 quarter square positions. In normal spots there is somewhere around a 50% chance of that happening. In the slate sweet spots, that chance is much higher.I think the way slate works is that by picking up a slate, some sort of random toggle exists in the slate spot and surrounding locations - I'm not sure what the radius is - maybe 2 or 3 positions out from the slate spot.
I've noticed that if I have slate in two spots close to each other and pick up one of them the other spot loses it's slate.
In the sweet spots i've noticed that some times slate shows up in a weird spot within a coordinate square, not in one of the 4 normal spots of a square. -- OldJoe
