Used in mining. Second among the specialty furnaces, this is used specifically to produce the known alloys: brass, bronze, pewter and steel.

Many things are known to be true, some of them actually are. One thing not in dispute is that any impurities at all will reduce your yield. Beyond that, all is guesswork.
