The Discipline of Thought
The discipline of Thought is that of the puzzle designer. Each Thought test introduces a specific variety of puzzle or intellectual game. To pass the test, the player must craft a puzzle of their own specification, which is then played and evaluated by the other citizens of Egypt. Players who can design puzzles that are fun and challenging will do well in this discipline.
Note that success in the Thought discipline is all about skill at designing puzzles, not solving them. Of course, it's fun to play and solve Thought puzzles (and it is also how one improves Focus), but solving alone does not help one advance in the Thought discipline. Only puzzle designers pass the tests.
Tests of Thought
- Initiation Into Thought: Set's Ladder, a game of probability where the player tries to climb the top of a pyramid in order to score an ante.
- The Test of the Tomb of the Immortal: A sliding-piece puzzle where the player must maneuver sarcophagi around each other and out of the playing field (a variant of Rush Hour, a well-known puzzle).
- The Test of Empty Hand: Played on an enormous building, this puzzle challenges the player to swap and manipulate colored blocks according to rules set by the designer.
- The Test of the Venery: A game played something like a scavenger hunt or treasure hunt. Alone or in teams, players run around the landscape following trails of clues.
- The Test of the Pulse of the People: In this game, players try to guess how their fellow Egyptians responded to a series of survey questions (a variant of the American game show Family Feud).
- The Test of the Bijou: Presented with a raw gem, the player must use the usual gemcutting tools to cut it into a shape specified by the designer.
- The Test of the Pathmaker: Players must trace a looping path that connects all of the towers on the board.
Details on the Tests of Thought may be found on the Tests page and the rewards of advancing in the Discipline on the Thought Rewards page.
