Guides > Blacksmithing

Other languages:
With Blacksmithing one can work on an Anvil. I assume Advanced Blacksmithing is just required to make the anvil tools and build the anvil, since I could work on the anvil with just the tools, while in the process of learning Advanced Blacksmithing.

This is wrong, I could use an anvil without blacksmithing. One only requires blacksmithing to use a forge. -Tanaric

You can load the Anvil with metals to start one of several projects. You can pin the 'Tools...' window, or just use the hotkeys:

Force Level [1-9] Sets the force you want to hit the metal with
Quality Check [Q] Shows the quality of your work, the number of hits, and the maximum amount of hits for the current project; requires "chat appears above player's heads" to be enabled
Goal Display [G] Toggles display of the ultimate goal, or your own work
Hammer: Round [R] flattens an area, spreading the metal to nearby areas
Hammer: Ball Peen [B] flattens a specific point, spreading the metal to nearby areas
Hammer: Wide Tungsten Chisel [C] flattens an area - wide horizontally but narrow front-to-back - spreading the metal only front-to-back
Hammer: Shaping Mallet [S] flattens an area, spreading the area farther than most other tools

When you have loaded metal for a project, you will see a slab of metal on the anvil. Check the Goal with [G] and work towards that with the right force and tools by clicking on the metal. If you are not satisfied, you can 'Discard Project for Scrap'. This will return the metal you put on the anvil.

Artistic Touch Bonus

Passing Art tests allows a blacksmith to add a small number of quality points to everything they make. The bonus is applied when the object is removed from the anvil, and is automatic.

The bonus has been calculated by rwindmtg as follows:

boost=(9999-qual)*((0.02*rank)+0.002)

For example, a Master of Art will add 102 points to a 9001 quality hatchet, for a final quality of 9103.

Guides for Specific Items

Carpentry Blades

A guide to making 7k quality carp blades.

Carpentry Blades with only Ball Peen Hammer and Round Hammer

Althrough it is easier to make a Carpentry Blade with a Wide Tungsten Chisel, you can make 5500+ blades with the round hammer and ball peen hammer.

Start with the sharp edge (use 'G' to see the goal). Hit the (will be) sharpened edge from left to right (if you are facing the sharpen edge of the blade) once - start on the leftmost edge, always hitting between the base and the top of the small hill that appears when you hit. Never mind about the quality here.

Now, redo the hits again until you see a high cliff like here. Dont bother about it yet - it will do down eventually. Repeat this until the cliff is very high.

Ok, now lets get that hill down a bit. Rotate your camera until you see the back of the Blade. Use your Round Hammer with force 7 (or 5-6 if you are afraid) and hit *EXACTLY* on the base of the hills, from left to right. You will have to practice this until you manage to do it right.

You will see there are still two small hills on the left and right side. Use the round hammer (force 4-5) and hit exactly where the hill bends (in the base). Repeat for the remaining vertices.

Hatchet

A guide to making an 8k hatchet out of iron.

Sharp Edged Knife Blade

The Sharp Edged Blade is required to make a Quality 4 knife. It requires a template to start, and the template is consumed in the attempt. The templates do not show a perfect model, they can vary wildly. It is recommended that you go to an expert blacksmith rather than attempt this yourself, unless you can consistently make 9k+ quality shovels, hatchets, and carp blades, as the templates are quite rare. Here are some screen shots of a quality 8647 blade crafted by Zomboe:
