New members are usually astonished by how difficult most things are in ATITD. We're more than willing to help you improve your efficiency, and will often offer advice and bottleneck resources, but but it's unlikely that you'll get much help with labor intensive basic resources.
The magic happens when you get interested in some aspect of the game that's being neglected by the current guild members. We're all inclined to support your passion, especially so if you've been a willing helper on our projects.
Using guild owned mines, quarries, and other equipment will allow you to focus your effort on the process rather than the infrastructure. As a general rule of thumb, about 2/3rds of the product you create on guild equipment is for personal use, while 1/3 of the product should go to guild sponsored projects, including the ones that you are promoting. For guild owned Quarries the split is 1/2 to the Guild, 1/2 to the workers.

Total Costs: 2 Lime, 1 Cactus Sap, 2 Salt, 3 Coal, 2 Potash, 5 Arsenic, 2 Cabbage Juice, 2 Sulfur, 1 Gravel, 2 Salts of Platinum. This recipe gives purity 5.
I have not been able to make a recipe that gives purity 6. So I recommend that you use nChanter and EldradUlthrans offer of 55 Metal blue, for 100 MoonSteel and 3 Arsenic. - McArine
Oyster Shell Marble is located at 1248, 2377.5, too close to the road to build a Quarry, so it's a good training location. It's on the north side of the road, just barely, across from our Thorn cluster.
I use abbreviations like CwWS for Clean with Worm Spirits, and so on.
I've used compass directions to indicate which way the tune will move. E.G. ENE means East North-East, or about 22,5 degrees from north.
These are the values I felt the tuning gave. If you find more exact figures please change them.
One useful combination to move east is DwCS and FaLP, continue switching between these two, and you will move slowly east. It is also good for going down a right side wall, looking for the opening.
I've seen PuRP move me two entire slots East, just so you know.
Please note, as I have written on the Chime Tuning Guide, that some of these holes are very difficult to get through, as if the hole is somehow smaller, or requires a certain angle. But I've been in all the slots with our Acoustics lab, so you can get there.
Happy Tuning :-) - McArine

Hunting for Gems is straightforward. Gem zones are modulo 40 on the X,Y coordinates. It's a matter of luck which type of gem you'll find in any given area, but every location in a given 40x40 area will yield the same type of gem.
If you're just mining for Gems, the recommended approach is to rebuild the mine immediately if you're not getting gems on 10% of the pulls. If you're getting more than 10% then you'll probably want to repair the mine once (which costs the same as building a new mine) while if the yield is more than 20% it's probably worth repairing the mine several times.
If you're getting metal then you're stuck with whatever gems you're getting. You can "pave over" a mine that yields metal, but you can't build another mine in the same location. Yeah, You can't avoidance the increasingly expensive repairs by rebuilding on the same ore vein.
