Basic Resources

This page is for common, fundamental resources that are used throughout the game economy. It is a quick-reference for how to get many of them, as opposed to the resources list, which contains all resources and links to specific pages about them.

The basic resources are the fundamental building blocks of the game economy. Most of these resources are collected by clicking one of the "resource icons" in the upper-right corner of the screen. Higher up steps in the resource hierarchy are bricks, boards and Stone Blades, all made from these basic resources. Keep in mind, as you collect, that you are limited to 500 weight and 500 bulk, unless you have modified your Attributes.

Collecting via Action Icons

Clay is collected from clay patches, a (usually) light-brown colored, dried- and cracked-looking terrain often found near water; its icon is red with a shovel partially stuck in the ground. Each deben of clay collected requires one jug of water which will be emptied of water when the clay is gathered. If you go to the School of Architecture you can receive a free jug to use to collect the 2 clay needed to pay the tuition for the Pottery skill. Clay is often used early on to make jugs to hold Water in Jugs.

Flint has a 5% chance of being found when collecting clay. You'll receive a message in your "Main" chat when you find some flint.

Grass is collected on grassy terrain; its icon is mostly blue with a hand clutching a swath of green grass. Each click of the grass icon gives you one deben of grass; you then need to move slightly to collect grass again. An easy way to collect grass is to set your gait to "walk" (Emote/Gait: Walk), and walk slowly across a large grassy area. Click the grass icon every time it appears. After you gather 500 grass, you will be able to collect grass while offline - check your Offline Chores menu. Grass is rarely used on its own, it is normally dried into Straw. The easiest way to collect grass is to build several greenhouses (Available with the release of Gardening at UWorship). Over the course of thirty minutes, a greenhouse will produce 100 debens of grass. It is possible to increase the amount of grass collected at once with the Rhythmic Strength skill.

Mud is found by water. One click on the mud icon (green with a bucket spilling brown dirt) will gather 100 debens of mud if you click "max", or any number you enter. Mud is used to make bricks.

Sand is collected on sandy terrain. One click on the sand icon (yellow with a bucket spilling tan sand) will gather 100 debens of sand if you click "max", or any number you enter. Sand is used to make bricks and firebricks, glass products, and as a component in some buildings.

Slate is occasionally found by water, in muddy areas. Run or walk around next to any body of water (if you can see the mud icon, you are close enough), and the orange slate icon will occasionally appear. If you run past a spot with slate, you can come back and it will still be there - unless you have collected slate or gold since seeing it. Typically, there is only one slate available at a time, but reports of up to 17 have been recorded in the Recordbook. Slate is used with boards to make slateshovels, and also combined in pairs to make stone blades with the Stone Blade Fabrication skill.

Water in Jugs is collected near ... water. (But not always!) Its light blue icon has a bucket pouring out blue water. Unlike other basic resources, where you are able to carry the resource as is, to collect and carry water you need jugs which are made with the Pottery skill. So, when you collect water, "Jugs" in your inventory will be filled to become "Water in Jugs." They are used to collect clay for pottery, and also to water fruit and vegetables and some types of flax to help them grow and produce.

White Sand is collected on white sand terrain. This terrain is rare, and should appear blinding white, though some people may see it as pitch black due to a graphics bug. Locations for white sand are on the white sand page.

Fish can be caught with the Fishing skill, by clicking on the icon showing a fish while carrying a fishing pole. It will only appear near water. You will not always catch a fish. Fish can be grilled in Bonfires or used in Cooking.

Collecting via clicking on the resource

Mushrooms are found in various locations in Egypt between about 2 and 5 am, and are used in Cooking.

Silt is found in small reddish-brown piles on the ground near water, usually near clay patches, or bridges or other river crossings. Each pile contains 10 debens of silt. Click on the pile to retrieve the silt. It is the other ingredient for firebricks.

Thorns are collected from various thorn-bearing plants. There are different plants in different regions, but they tend to look spiky. On each harvest, a thorn bush will produce a random quantity of thorns; it must then be left alone for one minute before it will produce more. Thorns are frequently used in early technology to help build flax combs.

Wood is harvested from trees. Different types of trees will produce various amounts of wood. After harvesting, a tree must be left alone for one minute before it will produce more wood. If you are carrying a hatchet (made with the blacksmithing skill, the amount of wood you obtain will increase, yielding anywhere from 2x to 5x what you could collect by hand. However, the time the tree needs to regrow will also increase by the same factor. Adding saltpeter to the tree after collecting wood will reduce the recovery time by half. Additionally, there is an option on your Utility menu to automatically gather wood when you click on a tree. After you gather 2,500 wood, you will be able to collect wood while offline - check your Offline Chores menu. Wood is frequently used to make boards (in a wood plane or carpentry shop) and fired in bonfires or Charcoal Hearths to make charcoal, or simply uses as fuel in various kilns and for kettles.

Produced with small effort

Straw is produced by drying grass. The simplest way to dry grass is to drop it: after a brief period of time, it will change color and turn into straw. (The more grass you drop in a pile, the longer it will take to dry; there are no limits to the size of piles dropped. Many people suggest 20 debens as the optimal number - but you are welcome to test out that notion.) Straw is used to feed camels and is an ingredient in the production of bricks. (I use 9, since you can drop piles of 9 VERY fast (click on a tacked "drop..." window, type 9, hit enter, repeat.)) Grass may also be dried in drying racks or flax hammocks, which work faster than dropping it on the ground and can securely dry up to 200 debens of grass at once.

Metals

Most of the common metals can be obtained by Mining a level 1 mine, collecting the stones in a ore cart, and firing them in some form of furnace. Most of the rare elements are obtained from using an extraction bit in a level 2 or greater mine.

Common Metals Include:
Iron Copper Zinc Tin Aluminum Silver Lead Gold

Rare Metals Include:
Strontium Antimony Tungsten

Gems, Dirt, and Limestone

These can be obtained by Mining a level 1 mine and breaking the stones with a Jeweler's Pick.

Mined Gems Include:
Quartz Ruby Sapphire Emerald Topaz Diamond
