Vegetables

Overview

Vegetables are one of the mainstays of Egypt, and have numerous uses. These are detailed under the individual pages. Vegetables are grown from seeds, such as "Carrot Seeds" or "Cabbage Seeds". Every University of Worship will give each citizen (paid accounts only) one packet of four seeds of a random type of vegetable. You may visit as many universities as you wish to accumulate many seeds; here is a list of Universities. By using a growing method unique to each plant, you can get more than one seed back - not all of these methods are known.

There are currently nine types of vegetables:

pepper seed reproduction dosen't appear to be working in method described above anymore - need more information perhaps other factors affecting reproduction - anyone else trying method above and not getting seed back or perhaps people who are still getting 2 seeds back could provide more information on exact location time etc? - Bramblebrae

OK, I put this under Peppers, but no one looks there so I'm copying it here. For two rl days (February 11-12, 2008), ending on Egypt day Peret IV-17, every pepper seed I planted yielded two seeds. I suspected that my ability to reproduce seeds wouldn't last and planted a lot of peppers for two days, in multiple locations. The ability may have existed earlier, but I hadn't planted peppers before and didn't know. It is possible that players become able to reproduce peppers somewhat randomly. To ensure a supply of pepper seeds, it would be good if everyone with some would plant one regularly and check to see if they are the lucky pepper seed producer. Since I opened pepper seed trading at The Goods, you can get wealthy fast by trading seeds. --Julian Jaynes

? Does this mean that no one has ever gotten extra carrot seeds? Or just that there's no clear pattern? - Fugue

Growth conditions have changed since the beta test, and are different than from previous Tales.

(Dates and Coconuts are harvested wild from palm trees; Grapes and Citrus Fruits are cultivated in special buildings.)

Uses

Cultivation

Almost all vegetables are grown in the same fashion: Plant a seed in the appropriate terrain, and water the plant that appears. Every time the plant grows larger, water it again. After the fourth watering, the plant will reach maturity and may be harvested. If a plant is not watered, it will shrink; if it shrinks too far, it will die leaving behind a single seed. If any plant other than onions is overwatered (watered twice before it grows), it will die (going back to a seed).

Base vegetable yields from 1 to 15 per harvest, plus 1 seed, have been reported. Vegetable and seed harvests can vary based on location, time, avatar, and possibly other factors. Data is still being gathered about the variables per vegetable. See the individual pages for each vegetable for more information.

Cultivation in Prior Tales

Our grandparents, and their grandparents built Pyramids of the Fertile Land, which boosted base yields of all vegetables.

They also built [Aqueduct Water Tower]?s for [The Test of Life]?, which provide the possibility of tripling normal vegetable yields.

In our grandparents' day, another way to get extra seeds was to be blessed by a Priest of Amun, which gave 1 additional seed for the first planting they did after the blessing.
